Hello to all our friends!
"It's kind of fun to do the impossible!"

On Christmas Eve, several years ago, I was in Martin's, doing some last minute shopping and ran into an old neighbor. After exchanging greetings, she shared with me that her husband was at home in excruciating pain in his lower back. She explained how she wished she could get him in to see me, but she didn't have any time to get a doctor referral. I felt badly and volunteered to drive to their home, right then and there. I helped him to get on his feet by decreasing his sharp back pain. They were so appreciative, and wished that they could have just come right to my office for the treatment. As of July 1, their wish, will become a reality!!

Indiana finally did it! They put all personal agendas aside and decided to put the patient's health first. Indiana passed a law allowing patients to see physical therapists without having to be sent by a physician! We are the last state to allow patients to choose where they need to go for their healthcare, with regard to physical therapy.

As of July 1,2013, you can actually call our office and we can get you in for an evaluation and treatment! Whether it's a new or old injury, whether it's your back, neck, shoulder, knee, elbow, ankle or hip, we will now be able to see you, without having to have a referral from your physician first.

In the past, many of you have called me to be seen for a new injury, as I had treated you, or one of our therapists had treated you for a former problem . Upon calling, you hoped that we could get you in as soon as possible because of the pain. For 24 years, we have been unable to evaluate and treat you even though you may have known the injury was similar to the earlier injury that we helped you recover from. You trusted us with your care and wanted to be seen immediately as your pain was unbearable.

Those days will be over as of July 1! If you are thinking we at McDonald Physical Therapy can help you get control of your  pain, help you get stronger, help to educate you in terms of your body, please call us to set up an appointment. We still will have great relationships with your physicians and will always keep them abreast of any physical therapy we perform, as we are all here to help you get "Stronger Everyday"!!
Enjoy! :)

Indiana Enacts Direct Access

Indiana Gov Mike Pence signed HB 1034 on April 29th, giving Indiana residents direct access to evaluation and treatment by a physical therapist (PT) without a physician referral.

The law, which will take effect on July 1, allows for evaluation and up to 24 days of treatment without a referral but continues to require a referral for spinal manipulation and sharp debridement.

Prior to passage of the new law, a referral was required for all physical therapist services, both evaluation and treatment. Enactment of HB 1034 means that all 50 states and the District of Columbia now have direct access to evaluation, and 48 states plus DC, including Indiana, have some level of direct access to treatment.

"We are thrilled that Indiana has become the latest state to offer patients the choice of direct access to physical therapist services. Ensuring patient access is a cornerstone of APTA's vision and mission," said APTA President Paul A. Rockar Jr, PT, DPT, MS. "I congratulate our colleagues in the Indiana Chapter for their resilience and dedication in enacting this vital legislation after many years of tough battle. I also want to thank Rep David Frizzell for authoring the bill and Sen Patricia Miller for sponsoring the bill in the Senate."
