The Episcopal Diocese of Utah Newsletter

First June Edition

Welcome to the latest edition of the Episcopal Diocese of Utah newsletter! Our newsletter has shifted to a bi-weekly release schedule for the summer. We are in the midst of Pride Month and many of the affordable, inclusive events that our Diocese will be involved in are around the corner! This weekend we look forward to the retirement celebration of Canon Chancellor Steve Hutchinson. We've also launched the landing page for our Tuniyay documentary, premiering next month at the Salt Lake Public Library. And of course, Camp Tuttle is in full swing of summer camp and activities.

Stay informed and connected by following our newsletter and social media updates. To send services, community events, or important updates, please email the Communications Assistant for Mission and Ministry, David Skorut, by clicking here, and we will assist in promoting your events!

This Weekend! Retirement Celebration of the Canon Chancellor Stephen Hutchinson, Esq.

Canon Chancellor Stephen Hutchinson, Esq. wraps up 40 years of service to the church. He has served as Chancellor, Church Counsel, longtime General Convention Deputy, Episcopal Community Services Director, Parish Vestry Member and in numerous other positions.

Bishop Phyllis Spiegel invites all to say goodbye "in style" on Saturday June 15th at the Episcopal Diocese of Utah. The event will take place from 5:00-7:30pm.

Tuniyay Trailer & Website Launch in Anticipation of Documentary's Feature-Length Premiere

Production Recounts Our Church's Involvement in the Uintah Boarding School

Click the preview above to watch the trailer for "Tuniyay."

The Episcopal Diocese of Utah is proud to release the trailer and official website for the documentary, Tuniyay, meaning "to tell the story" in the Ute language. This compelling documentary examines the painful history of the Uintah Indian School at Whiterocks. On July 16th at 6:30 PM there will be a free premiere at the Salt Lake City Public Library Auditorium. A panel discussion will follow, giving further insight into the production and some of the featured interviews. We encourage everyone to invite others to join us for this significant occasion.

In line with our church's broader commitment to reconciliation and truth-telling, Tuniyay offers a stark look at the shared history between our church and the Ute Tribe at the Uintah Boarding School. Beginning in the 1880s, these "Indian Schools," run by the government and various religious organizations such as ours, sought to erase indigenous cultures, languages, and traditions. The consequences were often tragic, with long-lasting trauma that still affects communities today.

The documentary, produced by Diocesan Communications Director Craig Wirth, continues to evolve: new research and interviews are shedding light on a deeper involvement of our church than initially realized. Visit the official website to view the trailer and learn more about the documentary and the July 16th premiere.

How The Diocese of Utah is Getting Involved in Pride Month This June

By Ingrid Van Zanten, Director of Camp Tuttle

Camp Tuttle and the Episcopal Diocese have made the decision to support SLC Pride this year. SLC Pride operates as a local, grassroots organization, funded by individuals and organizations in our community who seek to "Foster a vibrant and inclusive celebration of Queer community and its diversity,

where visibility, belonging, support and equity are at the heart." SLC Pride will host a festival on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots at The Gateway Mall in downtown Salt Lake City. Camp Tuttle will host a booth where members of the wider diocese are welcome to come say hello and support our outdoor camping ministry and all its growth in trans and queer inclusion. Throw a cornhole or play spikeball and help spread the word that Camp is for Everyone and the Episcopal Church Welcomes All.
