"When God takes from us the power to labor, we should receive the trial courageously, letting it serve to elevate us above the things of earth and remembering that Our Lord, having permitted us to work for our neighbor, now wishes us to prepare for heaven.”
–St. Vincent de Paul

Thanks to everyone who participated in the 2021 Friends of the Poor Walk hosted by the Diocesan Council and the St. Albert the Great Conference. Over 100 Vincentians and their friends and families gathered at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church on Saturday, September 25, 2021 to raise awareness about poverty and funds for our neighbors in need. To date, the Friends of the Poor Walk in Central Texas has raised over $35,000.
|
|
The walk started with a prayer from Father Charlie Garza, the pastor of St. Albert the Great. With smiles and laughter, walkers followed the course on the parish property until they reached the finish line. Participants then enjoyed refreshments and a presentation from one of the sponsors.
|
|
The Friends of the Poor Walk started in 2008 to raises awareness about the challenges faced by our neighbors in need. It is also a fundraising opportunity for Conferences to raise funds to further their mission to provide financial assistance, food assistance, and other basic essentials to those in underserved communities.

Gospel Reading: (Mark 10: 2-16)
People were bringing children to him that he might touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” Then he embraced them and blessed them, placing his hand on them.
Vincentian Reflection:
The disciples had been with Jesus and heard his teaching for quite some time, but they
developed a hardness of heart, and so Jesus became indignant. This gospel is about human hardness of hearts and about to whom the kingdom of God belongs; not to those with hard hearts, but to the innocent ones who keep themselves turned toward God. Jesus illustrates this by saying “accept the kingdom of God like a child.” Anything else he might have said to his disciples was not recorded; but we might surmise that he was saying we must lose our hardness of hearts by being open and accepting like little children, by being innocent like children, by being trusting like children, by not picking up the sinful baggage that develops as we grow into and live adulthood. We must lose our schema of things so we can find God’s intention. Lose the hardness of heart. Find the kingdom. Our embracing the kingdom embodies our being embraced by Jesus. (Living Liturgy, p.220)
Vincentian Meditation:
Simplicity “is the virtue I love most.” In St. Vincent’s eyes, Jesus is utterly simple—like a child. He speaks the truth. He says things as they are. His intentions are pure, referring all things in life to God. To St. Vincent, simplicity meant genuineness and transparency. Vincent always knew that all good comes from God and he acknowledge his own limitedness and sinfulness. Vincent lived with an exuberant confidence in God’s forgiveness and love.”

National Gazette Questions and Answers
Q: We have two Conference members that for the past 8 years have not done any personal contact with the poor, but they do have a say on how we help those in need. Is there anything in the Rule that states they have to be involved person to person with our friends in need? If so, where is it written and where do we go from here with that?
A: To be an active member you must be Catholic, attend meetings regularly, and participate in the works of the Society, which is helping our friends in need. However, this does not mean that someone who, for example, works in a pantry and doesn’t do face to face visits but is still active isn’t a member, so long as they are doing works of the Society and not just attending meetings. If they are only attending meetings and not doing the services/works, then they are not eligible to vote. However, if the Conference allows them to attend the meetings, then the Conference is allowing them to offer opinions.
Preguntas y Respuestas de la
Oficina Nacional
