In-reach
One of the best things I’ve learned about Ascension in the past several months has been how members care for each other. Parishioners provide rides to and from church, call one another up to check in after a surgery or doctor’s appointment, share homemade treats to brighten a day. I’ve noticed that there are a handful of souls who do most of this quiet and noble work. It’s taken me months to learn about it in fact, so quietly are they tending to fellow members.
I’m reminded of a ministry that took place at my sending parish, where members had created a sort of “phone tree” that some of us may remember our mothers having pinned near the wired telephones in our homes, a list of families in the neighborhood or church to call should there be an emergency or a death or a new baby. The ministry worked just like that. “Good Samaritans,” they were and still are called. Every week, a different person or family would be “on call” should a need arise. Those needs were often in the form of a few delivered meals throughout the week, picking up groceries, or even just several phone calls to check in.
I had wondered if this sort of “in-reach” could work at Ascension. And then I discovered that, in a more impromptu way, it already is. This is important work, especially in a parish experiencing a period of transition. It’s the kind of work that has to continue on even as leadership comes and goes.
I plan to spend some more time in the coming months organizing an “in-reach” network. The pastoral listening sessions mentioned later in this newsletter offered by Fr. Petite are a part of this effort. Would you like to be a part of such a network? The commitment could be as much or as little as you want. Please send me an email or give me a call to talk about how you could contribute to Ascension’s “in-reach.”
—Mtr. Murphy-Gill
P.S. Two beloved members of our community, Burton Nelson and Robert Browning, are celebrating birthdays this week. Perhaps your “in-reach” could start by sending these nonagenarians birthday cards. Their addresses can be found in the Ascension Directory or by calling the church.

Confirmations and Receptions
|
|
This spring, Bishop Chilton Knudsen will preside at four diocesan confirmation and reception services open to candidates from all congregations in the Diocese of Chicago. At least one member of Ascension will be received into the Episcopal Church on June 11 at St. James Cathedral. If you are interested in being confirmed or received or have questions about what this might look like for you in the future, please reach out to Meghan Murphy-Gill via email or by calling the church.

Pastoral Listening Learning Opportunity
|
|
Fr. Bob Petite, a Supervisor in Clinical Pastoral Education, has offered to lead a 3- to 4-session training series on pastoral listening for those interested in learning or improving listening skills. This will likely take place over the summer. If this is something that interests you or you would like to hear more about it, please reach out to Mtr. Murphy-Gill or respond to this survey here.
