Dilettante or Genius?
Multipotentialite!
Are you multi-talented? Do you move from project to project with ease? Do new ideas intrigue you? Do you rise to meet the challenges of exploration and innovation? Do you love to learn new things?

And do other people sometimes have problems with that?

We're not talking ADHD here but rather what used to be called being a "Renaissance Man" [that was back when most women weren't allowed, much less encouraged, to do very much at all beyond wifely, motherly, household endeavors].

The Renaissance Person was expected to be fluent in a number of languages, to be proficient in the sciences and math, to be a competent musician, a graceful dancer, an accurate marksman and to excel at fencing. You should  also be a compelling public speaker, have perfect manners, be charitable, and contribute to society.

While most people had one thing they got by doing okay with [farming, stonemason, sailor, weaver] these exceptional Renaissance People rose above the rest and were the leaders and visionaries of their cultures.

In the mid-20th century specialization flourished as a result of the overload of information required to excel in many fields: medicine, engineering, law, education, military, etc. Most people worked at one job for decades then retired with a gold watch and hopefully a pension.

No more.

With today's break-neck speed of innovation, adaptation, and obsolescence the old pattern of one-job-per-lifetime is a thing of the past and people are expected if not required to re-invent themselves many times over in order to survive in our instantaneously shifting world.

A very popular TED talk by Emilie Wapnick explores why some of us don't have just one ability and why that is so very valuable. Watch and learn about Multipotentiality!

MYTHIC MEANING

In some mythic systems that embrace reincarnation, this shifting from one interest to another is explained as a process called "Recapitulation". In a new lifetime you 'touch base' with skills you have developed in other lifetimes until you get to the point where you start learning new things.
It's said that old souls with many lifetimes may spend decades as a seeming dilettante: flighty, easily bored, always seeking something new and able to master many things very quickly -- because they've done so in some other lifetimes.

People like Mozart, Leonardo da Vinci, and Doogie Howser could all be said be have been recapitulating in their current lifetime skills they had learned in previous lives.

So, did you want to be a doctor when you were five... a firefighter at age ten... an astronaut at fifteen... a veterinarian, a musician, a scientist, an artist, a farmer, a warrior, a parent, a writer.... And you're still finding joy in exploring new concepts?

You may well be a Renaissance Person -- or as we now call it, a Multipotentialite. It's something to embrace, be proud of, and live to the fullest as best you can.

MYTH TIP:

Demosthenes was a great Greek orator in the 4th century BCE. To improve his speaking abilities he practiced with pebbles in his mouth and also by the sea, learning to project his voice over the noise of the waves.

These days you can go to Toastmasters or take speech classes to improve your abilities. It's easier on the teeth than pebbles in the mouth. Though practicing at the beach is still a good idea.

Your Heart to Our Hands  to Hollywood

Besides your great book or screenplay, you'll need the "leave-behinds" or "one-sheets" for when production companies ask to see more. From these they can pitch your projects to their company -- and hopefully get requests for the script or book itself.

"MYTHWORKS is a brilliant gem.
I worked with Pamela Jaye Smith in preparing to pitch my book
for movie production. The result was 5 interested producers!
She is a master in the art and science of storytelling, and has
the integrity to match. It has been one of the great blessings
of my life to connect with MYTHWORKS."
