Hello Soon-to-be Rising 5th Grade Families!

As we move into the final few weeks of the current school year, we are already beginning to look ahead to next year, when our current 4th graders will become the "big kids on campus" and take on the 5th grade. Please read on for a bit of information about the early planning for next year, a link to complete our 2024-2025 5th Grade Volunteer Form, and a request for volunteer help from the CURRENT 5th grade parents to assist during the 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony happening later this month. Thanks!

Help Us Make Next Year the BEST 5th Grade Year Ever!

As you may know, 5th grade is a special year at MES, where we celebrate the accomplishments of our amazing students throughout their elementary school journey and prepare to send them off to middle school. Traditionally, there are special events and opportunities for our 5th graders throughout the year, and as you can imagine, it takes A LOT of volunteer support to pull everything off. At a very high level, here are some of the events and opportunities that traditionally happen at MES related to 5th grade (in addition to all of the usual school-wide MES fun):

August

  • Kick off to "First Fun Fridays" (small treats offered at recess to the 5th grade on the first Friday of the month throughout the year)
  • Students begin new extracurriculars, including Student Council, Yearbook Club, and Morning Announcements

September

  • 5th Grade Movie Night (an MES tradition that takes place on a Friday evening in the auditorium)

October

  • 5th Grade Haunted House at the Monster Bash Halloween Carnival

November

  • Proposed 5th Grade Service Project (typically in conjunction with the Student Council)
  • 5th Grade Yearbook Baby Pics and Ads are typically due

January

  • Proposed 5th Grade Social Event (TBD; potentially a second movie night?)
  • Rising Rams "Ramily Night" at Howard Middle School

February/March

  • Overnight Trip (formerly to Blue Ridge but will have a new location this year)
  • Game Show Night (a new tradition started this past year that was a HUGE hit)
  • Howard Curriculum Talk (organized by Howard Middle School)

April

  • MES Parent Panel on the Middle School Transition
  • Howard Fun on the Field Event
  • Proposed 5th Grade Service Project

May

  • 5th Grade Graduation Yard Signs
  • "Senior Week" (including an End of the Year party, Senior Awards, and the 5th Grade Variety Show)
  • 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony

Of course, nothing is set in stone yet and these plans can be changed based on the preferences of our current families and students. But regardless of the final plans, pulling this off is going to take A LOT of help! To help us start strong in August, we wanted to begin gauging interest from all of our current 4th grade parents and caregivers NOW. If you'd like to assist with anything listed above, or just want to be a happy helper with general organizing, please let us know by completing the 2024-2025 MES 5th Grade Volunteer Form below.

We we plan to use the information collected via this form to do some early planning over the summer and anticipate having a general 5th grade organizing kick off meeting in early August. As always, thank you for all of the ways that you have supported our students throughout their time at MES, in whatever form that has looked like to you!

Volunteers Needed for the 2024 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony!

In addition to our early planning for next year, we have a specific request for volunteers from the current 4th grade families to assist with this year's 5th Grade Moving On Ceremony!

When: May 24th, 2024 at 9am

Where: MES Auditorium

It is an MES tradition for the parents and caregivers of Rising 5th graders to "staff" the annual Moving On Ceremony so that the current 5th grade families can focus on enjoying the day and celebrating their students. This is also a great opportunity to experience this special ceremony before our students take part next year.

If you are able to help out with this event, please sign up for a volunteer slot via this SignUp Genius. If you have questions about the Moving On Ceremony, please contact Denise Lippert.

Thanks!
