Closing the Gap on the Des Plaines River Trail
|
Is your drivers license expiring? |
|
On Friday, July 17, the culvert under Diamond Lake Road at Indian Creek collapsed and a full road closure is necessary. A detour will be in place until the repair is complete. The road will be closed until the repair is complete. LCDOT will work as quickly as possible to get the road back open. At this time, it is hard to estimate the length of time needed for this closure because pipes this size must be custom ordered. ![](http://files.ctctcdn.com/59f14099001/4863534f-50d7-4a3a-b844-93a0054b00e7.jpg?a=1121688201404)

Assessment Notices for Fremont Homeowners |
The 2015 assessment notices will be in the mail next week for Fremont Township . All properties in Fremont Township will also be published in the Mundelein Review on July 16, 2015. This is a reminder that if you feel your property is incorrectly assessed, you should contact the assessors office with comparable information. The assessor's office sets the value of your property and the taxing bodies set the tax rates. If you need help with the comparable information, the Lake County Assessor's Office is holding outreach sessions. Click here for dates and times. There are two classes available for you before you need to file your appeal. Before filing your appeal, contact the Fremont assessor's office with your evidence. They can be reached at 847 223-2846. If you are not happy with the outcome of your meeting, the FINAL FILING DATE to appeal for Fremont Township properties will be August 17, 2015. Please note that this is the only time you can appeal your assessment. Many people call the assessor's office when the tax bill comes. That is too late. You must appeal the value of your home by August 17, 2015. |

If you're looking for a truly unique outdoor adventure, head for Volo Bog State Natural Area in Lake County in northeastern Illinois. The site includes Volo Bog, the only quaking bog in Illinois, significant in that it exhibits all stages of bog succession. A floating mat of sphagnum moss, cattails and sedges surrounds an open pool of water in the center of the bog.
Local citizens mounted a fundraising campaign to purchase the bog in 1958, and the land was later deeded to the University of Illinois. In the late 1960s, local citizens again advocated for Volo Bog to protect the site from proposed development, and encouraged its eventual transfer to management of the Illinois Department of Conservation, now the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Volo Bog was dedicated as an Illinois Nature Preserve in 1970. Three years later, it was registered as a National Natural Landmark. More than 1,100 additional acres of land have been purchased to protect and enlarge the state preserve, which now includes marshes, prairie restoration areas, woodlands, two other bogs, and scenic trails.
Originally opened in 1980, Volo Bog's Visitor Center is housed in a dairy barn built in the early 1900s. Renovations began in 1996 to bring the building up to code, make it fully accessible and accommodate the needs of the fast-increasing population of northeastern Illinois. The center includes a program room, the Tamarack Shop, offices and restrooms on the first floor. An elevator, housed in the silo, takes visitors to the second floor exhibits, hands-on discovery area and library.
A picnic area with tables and an outdoor privy is conveniently located adjacent to the visitor center parking lot. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own grill for cooking or use one of two near the picnic shelter. Ground fires and alcohol are strictly prohibited at Volo Bog State Natural Area.

If you have used towels, sheets or blankets that need to be recycled, please consider bringing them to Fremont Township at 22385 Rt 60, Mundelein to be donated to local Animal Shelters and Rescues.
