Breaking down the barriers to 2SLGBTQIA+ representation in boardrooms and academia | University of Saskatchewan assistant professor Rachel Loewen Walker’s research has already led to policy changes tackling barriers to life as a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, including by resulting in new provincial ID policies and support for nonbinary and trans people in Saskatchewan. Calling the current targeted backlash against transgender and sexually diverse communities a “concerning trend,” the program chair of Women's and Gender Studies and director of the Social Innovation Lab on Gender and Sexuality is now turning her focus to inside academia. Her research team is conducting focus groups across the country to study leadership roles and experiences, or lack thereof, for 2SLGBTQIA+ faculty and staff within Canadian universities. Barely underway, the research is already placing new 2SLGBTQIA+ leaders at the table. | |
Human intervention could reverse wildfire trends,
suggests researcher
|
Staggering environmental, human and infrastructure losses due to wildfires in recent decades may have already crested in some of the world’s previously most fire-prone areas, including equatorial Asia. The reversal in fire trends likely stems from concerted human intervention, says Sean Sloan, Canada Research Chair in the Human Dimensions of Sustainability and Resilience, who studies hidden trends within broader global environmental changes. The Vancouver Island University professor believes land management to prevent and supress fires could bring similar changes for Canada and elsewhere.
