How Your Brain Makes Sense of Vowels and Sounds


What is a word? How do you know when it starts or stops? The answer may be more complex than you’d imagine. UCSF PhD student Ilina Bhaya-Grossman asked those questions of nearly 300 people in a packed auditorium as part of the University’s annual science storytelling competition, Grad Slam 2024.

Could a Mobile App Detect Early Signs of Dementia?


A research team led by UCSF deployed cognitive tests through a mobile app and found it could detect early signs of frontotemporal dementia in people who were genetically predisposed to get the disease but had not yet developed symptoms.

UCSF Generative AI Platform Versa Now Available by Request: UCSF's secure generative artificial intelligence platform, Versa, has launched across the UCSF enterprise. The platform is approved for use with UCSF data while offering a safe and protected environment for faculty, staff and learners to leverage generative AI technologies. After completing a required training course, Versa is available by request to all faculty, staff and learners with a ucsf.edu email address and network login or VPN for remote users. Grammarly and NameCoach Coming Soon: The UCSF IT Collaboration Services Team is excited to roll out two new digital tools to enhance the UCSF work experience: Grammarly and NameCoach. Grammarly is a writing assistance tool that reviews spelling, grammar and punctuation, among other features. NameCoach is an audio tool to aid with name pronunciation. Seeking Lab Hosts for CURE Summer Research Internship Program: CURE is an eight-week paid internship for first generation, low income and underrepresented rising high school seniors and current community college students to experience and learn about health research at UCSF. CURE is seeking labs interested in hosting 1-2 high school students to be paired with a graduate student, postdoc and/or faculty. The program covers stipend and onboarding costs. UCSF COVID-19 Guidance: UCSF’s COVID-19 Return to Work Policy and Guidance remains unchanged, including guidance from Alameda and Contra Costa counties. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) latest Respiratory Virus Guidance is intended for a general audience and community settings, UCSF adheres to stricter guidelines in accordance with health care systems and high-risk congregate settings.
