The story of Boldt Castle comes to life as you visit the 120 - room palatial summer home. At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size Rhineland castle in Alexandria Bay, on picturesque Heart Island. The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise. Due to the sudden death of his wife in 1904 the project was never completed and was subject to vandalism for many years until the Thousand Island Bridge Authority began managing the castle and started the restoration according to Mr. Boldt’s original plans.
Beginning in 1900, the Boldt family spent summers in the 1000 Islands at the Boldt Family’s Wellesley House near Mr. Boldt’s Wellesley Island Farms while 300 workers including stonemasons, carpenters, and artists fashioned the six story, 120 room castle, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge, Alster tower (children’s playhouse) and a dove cote. Not a single detail or expense was spared.

On your way to Boldt Castle the tour travels through "Millionaires Row where you will view magnificent summer homes of the rich and famous from the gilded age. Many of these lavish mansions still stand today. Homes like Casa Blanca (pictured below, left), Hopewell Hall, Nobby Island (pictured below, right),Win Lee Lodge, and Long Vue the “Artificial” Island.

On September 11th and 12th Clayton Island Tours welcomed Brenda and Steve Bahler of Top Notch Travel Tours and 39 of their clients. This owner operated travel agency and motor coach company originates in Lebanon, Indiana. As part of their Adirondack Region Upstate tour, Top Notch had a superb visit to the 1,000 region in 2022 and added us again to the 2023 schedule. Clayton Island Tours planned a two day, "Experience The 1,000 Islands" itinerary. They enjoyed a lovely cruise on the St. Lawrence on our own Ultimate Tour with picnic lunch onboard. Captain Brian Drappo was their Step-On-Guide and provided us with several images of the group.
