Shielding of Desert Sage High School: Mission accomplished!

Thanks to our efforts, the students and teachers of Desert Sage High School are now protected from the microwave radiation being emitted by a nearby T-Mobile cell tower. This tower was “upgraded to 5G” last year, and radiation levels in classrooms facing the tower shot up. After discussions with school administrators, a decision was made to shield the exterior with aluminum metal mesh screening to stop the radiation from entering the building.  Over the last six months, Safe Tech Tucson raised the funds for these materials, a total of $1,570 from 44 donors.  Last November we shielded part of the exterior, and Saturday March 9th the shielding was completed thanks to all the volunteers who helped out. A BIG thank you to all who contributed donations and helped with the shielding!

The project got national coverage in an article on the Building Biology Institute website and a supportive post from the Environmental Health Trust: "Desert Sage High: Shielding students from cell tower radiation". Theodora Scarato, Executive Director of the Environmental Health Trust, wrote: "We applaud actions taken to protect students, teachers and staff." She let us know that a report commissioned by T-Mobile itself recommended a more protective exposure limit 1000 times lower than the FCC's current limit. She ensured us that our hard work was worth it, writing that the scientific research indicating serious safety issues, including cancer, has significantly increased.   Our efforts at the local level in Tucson reach beyond. We are not only raising awareness and directly helping here, but also inspiring people across the country.

CDC educates about Radio Frequency Radiation health effects ... Kind of.

Notice the centrally-located image of a young person putting a cell phone directly to their head along with other sources of radiation that fall along the “Electromagnetic Spectrum”.  The caption at the bottom states: “Learn more about radiation and how to protect yourself from the possible health effects of too much radiation exposure.”  It’s unclear why a person smoking a cigarette is featured close-by as well, but it does signal that we are dealing with a toxin that’s not good for us. At the Radio Frequency Radiation box below the graphic there is more information about cell phones and wearable technology, such as smart watches, fitness trackers and earbuds, some true and some not-so-true. The site says “Yes” these devices emit radiation and “Yes” they expose people to radiation… this is a good start.     For cell phones: You’ll find tips on how to reduce your exposure “if you are worried about cell phone use”.   For wearable technology: Don’t worry, "RF transmitters in wearable devices operate at extremely low power levels and normally send signals in streams or brief bursts (pulses) for a short period of time. As a result, wearable devices expose the user to very small levels of RF radiation over time." We can verify that here in Tucson, AZ this is not true. The wireless fitness trackers and ear pods tested by Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist Lisa Smith of EMF Wellness Tucson transmit continually at levels far exceeding the Building Biology “extreme concern” safety guidelines (1,000 µW/m2).  Apple Airpods emit particularly high levels of RF radiation.
