Appointments & Promotions

The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Oleh Akchurin to Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Nephrology, effective May 1, 2024. Dr. Akchurin was recruited to Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) following pediatric nephrology fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center. His research focuses on pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD), and more specifically on alterations of iron metabolism in CKD and kidney fibrosis. Dr. Akchurin has been independently funded, currently through the R03 award from the NIH National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders (NIDDK). He is a former recipient of the K08 career development award from the NIDDK. He is also a former Rohr Family Clinical Scholar at WCM, and has received additional grants from foundations and philanthropy, including the Hartwell Foundation Individual Biomedical Research Award and the Sy Syms Foundation Award. In addition to his basic science lab, Dr. Akchurin is the PI of the WCM Pediatric CKD registry and biorepository. He has been committed to the education of medical trainees and serves as the Associate Director of the Pediatric Physician Scientist Training Program at WCM.

 

Dr. Chani Traube has been appointed as the Gerald M. Loughlin, M.D. Professor of Pediatrics, effective  August 1, 2024. This appointment recognizes Dr. Traube's role as a groundbreaking researcher in pediatric delirium. Her accomplishments in the field and commitment as leader and mentor bring distinction to Weill Cornell Medicine.

Dr. Zenna Solomon (Pulmonology Fellow) was awarded the 2024 Pediatric Pulmonary Training Directors Association (PEPTDA) Award at this year’s ATS International Conference in San Diego, California and presented her poster for her work on Blood Sphingolipids as an Early Predictor of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia.

The ECMO Program for Adults and Pediatrics has been awarded the ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support – Gold Level for the second time around!

Professional Development Guidelines - Update for FY2025

To simplify the process for everyone, we will no longer require receipts for meals covered under the Professional Development allowance under the Professional Development Policy.

 

Complimentary Hotel Stays 

The department is excited to offer complimentary hotel rooms based on availability and with approval of their Division Chiefs to faculty who are in need an overnight stay in the city due to inpatient clinical duties. Any requests, approved by your Division Chief, need to be sent to PedsChairAdmin@med.cornell.edu one week in advance of the intended stay. If space is available (we have a limited number of rooms/month), you will be contacted with further details.

In an interview with PBS News, Dr. Sallie Permar discussed the persistent lack of pediatric specialists in fields such as neurology and pulmonology. She warns that missing early treatment and prevention of diseases can mean more problems and higher costs down the road. Watch the entire interview here!


Dr. Permar was also featured in Medscape in a live social media event to exchange information and opinions about where we are on the journey of protecting the fetus from congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV). Watch video here!


Dr. Miriam Samstein and Dr. Vivien Yap will begin their term as the early-career General Faculty Council representative for Pediatrics immediately. They will be in regular communication with faculty to share topics of interest and concern to solicit your opinion to communicate back to the Council and, through them, to the administrative leadership.

Drs. Thomas Ciecierega, Robbyn Sockolow and Aliza Solomon presented at the prestigious international scientific congress in Oslo, Norway on June 21-22, 2024.

 

Dr. Katharina Graw-Panzer held the first virtual NYP Sleep Summit, featuring “Sleep Across All Ages,” a collaboration of the adult and pediatric sleep center at WCM, which was a great success with excellent speakers and attendees from all campuses.

Dr. Catalina Acosta (Pulmonology Fellow) gave a podium presentation of her research on Untargeted Metabolomic Profiling Identifies Potential Disease-Specific Biomarkers in Urban Children with Obesity-related Asthma at the American Thoracic Society meeting in San Diego.

Dr. Zenna Solomon (Pulmonology Fellow) gave a podium presentation at the NY Academy of Medicine, one of two winning submission from WCM for the NYP Cornell Campus on Housestaff Quality Improvement Poster Session held in conjunction with the NYPH Quality in Care Symposium.

Shout Outs

Dr. Jennifer Salant and her staff are essential to providing patient-centered care, and the ECMO Program wants to honor them for their support and care to patients. Their daily presence and in-person communication play a vital role in establishing care goals and advanced planning, which helps patients, and their families fully understand and cope with the challenging process of ECMO.
