News from the Department of Internal Medicine - July 2023

Debra Romberger, MD, chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, shares a message with important updates for all faculty and staff.

Internal Medicine forms Office of Equity and Inclusive Excellence, appoints Dr. Marcelin Vice Chair
Jasmine Marcelin, MD, has been selected as the inaugural vice chair of equity and inclusive excellence for the Department of Internal Medicine.

The announcement was made by Debra Romberger, MD, professor and chair of internal medicine, who said she was excited and grateful for Dr. Marcelin’s enthusiasm and willingness to take on this role.

“Dr. Marcelin has been a leader in the justice, equity, diversity and inclusion space at UNMC since she started here,” said Dr. Romberger. “She created a task force for our residency program and will now expand her attention more broadly across our department.”

The new role comes with the formation of a new office of equity and inclusive excellence.

“I am looking forward to collaborating with amazing people within the department and across the UNMC campus to get the work done,” she said. “I am especially excited about the prospect of creating new opportunities for our faculty, staff, trainees and community members to be uplifted and recognized.”

Shane Tsai, MD, named Cardiovascular Division Chief
Shane Tsai, MD, has been named chief of the UNMC Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, part of the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine, effective July 1.

Dr. Tsai succeeds Dan Anderson, MD, PhD, who is stepping down after five years as division chief to return to being a UNMC clinician-investigator.

The announcement was made by Debra Romberger, MD, professor and chair of internal medicine.

Dr. Tsai has been section chief of electrophysiology in the cardiovascular medicine division and vice chair for specialty clinical care for the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine. He has served as medical director of cardiac implantable electronic devices and the electrophysiology laboratory. As division chief, Dr. Tsai also will be a part of the physician leadership team for Nebraska Medicine’s heart and vascular clinical program.

“He has proven himself in his current leadership roles, and I look forward to the next phase of our important cardiovascular medicine legacy under his guidance,” Dr. Romberger said. “Dr. Tsai is an outstanding clinician with education expertise and strong research interests, and he is committed to the continued success of the division.”

Internal Medicine faculty members complete iLEAD program
Thirty-two UNMC faculty members graduated from UNMC’s intensive, nine-month Interprofessional Leadership for Excellence and Academic Development (iLEAD) program on June 8.

The iLEAD program is designed to help faculty explore and refine their own leadership, collaborate with other rising leaders across campus and examine leadership topics such as change management, budgeting, communication and conflict resolution.

Congratulations to the 2023 Internal Medicine graduates of the iLEAD program: Bryant England, MD, PhD, Carrie Hoarty, MD, and Faris Khan, MD, MS.

Internal Medicine's Daniel Hershberger, MD, awarded Hirschmann Prize
Daniel Hershberger, MD, associate professor in pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, is a 2023 recipient of the Hirschmann Prize for Teaching Excellence, awarded by the UNMC College of Medicine’s 2023 graduating class. The prize was given to Dr. Hershberger for clinical teaching.

“I was honored to receive the Hirschmann Prize for Teaching Excellence,” Dr. Hershberger said. “When I found out, it was a surreal moment. Teaching the next generation of physicians is the most consistently rewarding part of my career.”

Infectious Diseases C-STARS program develops new biocontainment unit
The Negatively Pressurized Conex unit, or NPC, recently arrived on campus. The retrofitted shipping container is redesigned into a clinical space for high-level-isolation patient movement on military aircraft. Its arrival at UNMC is just the latest collaboration between UNMC and its C-STARS program and the U.S. Department of Defense, and a sign of how highly regarded UNMC, the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit and the Omaha Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (C-STARS) are by the U.S Air Force and the Department of Defense.

“This is a tremendous recognition of our critical partnership with UNMC experts and the expertise that our team is building,” said USAF Lt. Col. Elizabeth Schnaubelt, MD, director of C-STARS Omaha. “We’re the only site with Air Force team members embedded at a biocontainment unit that has the subject matter knowledge and experience from training with the teams here. There is no other site like that, not just in the Air Force, but across the DOD.”

Medical Center secures $15 million match for pancreatic cancer research
Private funds have been raised to match a state allocation of $15 million to bolster research into pancreatic cancer at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Two prominent Omaha families who lost loved ones to the deadly cancer were among the leading donors of the $15 million private match for UNMC’s Pancreatic Cancer Center of Excellence led by Sunil Hingorani, MD, PhD.

“Our goal is a cure for pancreatic cancer, and this support sets us strongly on that path,” said Dr. Jeffrey Gold, the chancellor of UNMC.

Lung clinics recognized by Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation
The Interstitial Lung Disease Clinic located in the Durham Outpatient Center and run by Daniel Hershberger, MD, is in its first year as a Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation Care Center. A typical day for patients includes pre-visit tests with pulmonary function testing, six-minute walk distance, echocardiography, and/or CT scanning. Providers review all testing with the patient and their families and develop a comprehensive plan on how to proceed with treatment. Diagnostically challenging cases often require a multidisciplinary evaluation, which includes review with Radiology, Pathology, and Rheumatology at a monthly conference.
Another ILD clinic led by Said Chaaban, MD, will be opening at Village Pointe.

The Autoimmune Lung Clinic located at Durham Outpatient Center offers a unique opportunity for patients with connective tissue related interstitial lung disease to get care from pulmonary and rheumatology simultaneously and allows the patient to leave with a clear plan moving forward. The clinics actively enroll in multiple clinical trials for both idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and progressive pulmonary fibrosis. Learn more
Bulldozing cancer in central Nebraska with state-of-the-art facility
Leaders unveiled plans for the Nebraska Medicine Kearney Cancer Center with a reception on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. This new center is an expansion of the partnership between Nebraska Medicine and Heartland Hematology and Oncology, which began in December 2021. The expanded cancer center will build upon the years of expertise and trust that Heartland Hematology and Oncology has built with its patients and community, led by Cynthia Lewis, MD, and Nick Hartl, MD.

“Our name is Nebraska Medicine, not Omaha Medicine,” said Nebraska Medicine CEO Jim Linder, MD. “Which is why we partnered with Dr. Lewis and her colleagues at Heartland Hematology and Oncology to grow cancer care in Nebraska, and that’s exactly what this new facility will be.”

Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Content prepared by Vice Chair of Equity and Inclusive Excellence Jasmine Marcelin, MD
July was Disability Pride Month, celebrating the month where the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law (July 26, 1990), intended to provide protection of the rights of people with disabilities. There is a growing body of data highlighting that despite disabilities being prevalent in the general population, people with disabilities in healthcare professions often do not disclose and/or may not receive the accommodations necessary for their success. The Docs With Disabilities Initiative has developed a wealth of information to identify and combat bias experienced by healthcare professionals with disabilities. Learn more about this by listening to the Docs with Disabilities podcast.

Check out upcoming events for the month of August on the UNMC Diversity & Inclusion Events Calendar.

Cultural Awareness Video Series: This is a video series from the Infectious Diseases Society of America, where Moderator Mati Hlatshwayo Davis, MD, MPH, and panelists Darrell McBride II, DO, Robert Pitts, MD, and Jen Balkus, PhD, MPH, discuss how members of the LGBTQIA+ community face challenges unique to their identities and how to emerge on the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion includes important considerations for practitioners, physicians, administrators and policymakers to help advance health equity.
