Watch and learn: All about ADUs

Informational video on what accessory dwelling units are

Take a look at the first installment in our informational video series

As part of our ongoing update to the Landmark Design Guidelines, landmark planners will launch a conversation on potential design guideline updates for accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, with a public meeting Tuesday, February 27.

There is a lot to know about this popular project type. To help break things down, we have created a series of short videos with additional information and context, which we will roll out over the coming weeks. The first 6-minute video addresses what ADUs are, why they are an important part of the design guidelines update and offers an overview of design guidelines in peer cities.

We encourage everyone with an interest in historic properties and ADUs to take a few minutes to watch in preparation for the upcoming community discussion and stay tuned for the next video covering density in historic neighborhoods and recent changes in the Denver Zoning Code relating to ADUs.

Our update to the Landmark Design Guidelines continues in 2024 with accessory dwelling units (ADUs) in historic districts and landmark properties. Join us in a community in conversation about what these new guidelines should look like later this month.

About Landmark Preservation

Landmark preservation is an important function of Denver Community Planning and Development. Denver City Council enacted the Denver Landmark Ordinance in 1967 to foster the protection, enhancement, perpetuation and use of structures and districts of historical, architectural, geographic and/or cultural significance.

Staff in our Landmark Preservation office and two landmark commissions carry out that mission through design review, historic surveys and landmark designations. Staff also assists owners of historic properties by providing guidance and resources for preserving, maintaining and rehabilitating historic buildings and properties.
