Here are some of the stories we are following this week. Connect with us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for up-to-the-minute news.
-
The Launchpad, a planned apartment complex for homeless youth on the city’s west side, is being built right next to a preschool, the Ruth Washburn Cooperative Nursery School. The owner of the preschool supports the project, but she never reached out to parents. Not all of the parents are happy with this support, and have started a parents group in opposition to this development. Make sure to check them out.
-
Speaking of The Launchpad, in our latest original article, we take a look at the outrageous cost for something that's supposed to be affordable. It's definitely not affordable for those of us being forced to pay for it.
-
Opposition to The Launchpad project is growing. Residents have many concerns, such as the size of the structure, the stability of the hillside in the area, and what impact this project might have on existing homes. Not to mention adding to the already ridiculous homeless situation on the westside of Colorado Springs.
-
If you live in or near the Pine Creek neighborhood, check out this newsletter from Preserve Pine Creek Village. They have a big meeting on August 3rd. Neighbors are opposing a low-income housing project being placed in a commercial area. Why are we forced to fight our own government every day?
-
One concerned resident, Mr. Steve Parrish, sent us an article detailing many of the reasons this development is being opposed. It’s definitely worth a read.
-
The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments Board of Directors will meet on Wednesday, August 9th to discuss trucking raw sewage from the Seven Falls complex through neighborhoods in the Cheyenne Mountain neighborhood. See more information in our Miscellaneous Meetings section below.
-
Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade wants to hear from you. In support of this, he’s going on tour – a listening tour that is. Click this link to see dates and times. We will also post these in our Miscellaneous Meetings section as they come up.
-
Our favorite pet peeve came up again this week: taxpayer funded goodies being advertised as free. This time, it’s school lunches. Why is it so difficult to call taxpayer funded things taxpayer funded things? The saying is as true now as it ever was: there is no such thing as a free lunch.
-
Over 9,600 Illegal immigrants residing in Colorado qualify for taxpayer funded health insurance. Though many who are here illegally may work and pay taxes, is it really fair to give non-citizens benefits paid for by taxpayers?
-
How much will supporting the Homeless Industrial Complex in Denver cost? The new mayor threw out a “ballpark” figure of $40 million. Do you think politicians really want to solve “homelessness”, or are they more concerned with the revenue stream this provides to government? As a refresher, the CEO of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless makes over $400,000 per year.
-
Also in Denver, taxpayers will now be providing trash service to the homeless. No, we’re not kidding. But, if you are not homeless in Denver, you get charged by the city for trash pickup. See how this works? Vagrants get special treatment. Taxpayers get the bills.
-
In Colorado Springs, several Goodwill thrift stores have had to permanently close their fitting rooms to customers because of rampant theft, drug use, and vandalism. Give those who disrespect law and order an inch, and those who disrespect law and order will take a mile. Have we reached the point of ridiculousness yet?
-
Sallie Clark, who endorsed Mayor Moblade during the mayoral runoff election, has now been hired by the mayor, to be the mayor’s Government and Military Affairs Adviser, at a salary of $138,749 per year.
-
The Colorado Springs Police Department is being sued yet again, this time, by the ACLU. It’s almost as if settling lawsuits with cash brings more lawsuits.
-
Also in CSPD news, remember how Mayor Mobolade and Chief Vasquez have no idea how much a brand new police academy will cost, but want your TABOR refund just to be safe? Colorado Springs City Councilman Dave Donelson, who seems to be the only councilmember standing up for taxpayers, has a great idea: Let those taxpayers who think CSPD deserves a police academy with unspecified costs donate to the cause.
-
It has been decided: United States Space Command will remain in Colorado Springs. Alabama is not pleased.
-
Take a look at the ugly truth behind Jared Polis’ Proposition HH. It will barely lower property taxes, but will end TABOR refunds forever, funding more and more government. Forever. The party of government only looks out for government, not you.
-
If you would like to help support us in our mission as government watchdogs by becoming a Newsletter Sponsor, we are offering two sponsorships for each weekly newsletter, at the nominal cost of $100 each. Funds raised from these sponsorship opportunities will help us to keep looking out for taxpayers. Also, if you’d like to help us fund our work within the community, click on our donation link to contribute.
Here are some upcoming meetings in the area. We hope you can attend one or more!
If there are other public meetings you’d like to see announced here, please drop us a line. We are happy to include them in an upcoming newsletter. These might be government-related, candidate, or elected official meetings. Thanks!
