Please Help Keep Fire Hydrants Free of Snow
This is a major concern for public safety. Firefighters need quick access to a water supply from hydrants to fight fires.
The Township is looking for volunteers to help with keeping fire hydrants visible in front of residential homes. Citizens can assist by making sure that they do not pile snow on or near a hydrant. If possible, they should be cleared at least a shovel’s width on each side to allow Fire Department access. Commercial and retail businesses are also requested to assist in clearing the snow from around hydrants that may be located on or near their properties.

Winter Hazards Facts
A major winter storm hits part of Michigan at least once per month between October and April. The following are some commonly asked questions about winter weather.
What is wind chill? Wind chill is the perceived temperature resulting from the effect of wind, in combination with cold air, which increases the rate of heat loss from the human body.
What is frostbite and What can you do to treat it? Frostbite is damage to body tissue caused by that tissue being frozen. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in extremities, such as fingers, toes, ear lobes, or the tip of the nose. Frostbite varies in severity from frostnip to deep frostbite depending on the length of exposure, temperature to which the skin is exposed and wind speed. For frostnip, place firm, steady pressure from a warm hand against the area. Also, blow on the surface holding the frost nipped area against the body. Do not rub the area, apply snow or plunge it into very hot or cold water. Victims of severe frostbite must receive prompt medical attention.
What is hypothermia? Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature drops to 95o F. or lower. It can develop whenever body heat loss exceeds heat gain. Hypothermia is not exclusive to winter; it can occur during the wind and rain of spring and summer. What are the warning signs of hypothermia? Often mistaken for fatigue, irritability, or dehydration, it may include some of these signs: abnormal decision making; improper response to cold; apathy; lethargy; decreased cooperation; slurred speech; disorientation; shivering; stumbling; clumsiness and muscle stiffness progressing to inability to move. How do you treat mild to moderate hypothermia (body temperature is greater than 90o F., conscious, shivering, able to walk)? Prevent further heat loss. Dry, remove from cold and insulate. Re-warm by warming the body core first. Re-hydrate with hot drinks and food. Seek medical attention. How do you treat severe hypothermia (body temperature is less than 90o F., unconscious, not shivering)? Evacuate to re-warm. Prevent further heat loss. Handle gently and seek immediate medical attention.

What To Do With A Worn American Flag
We all know that an American flag should be retired with dignity, but what should we do with one that has been tattered by the wind over time. Many of us know not to dispose of worn flags in the trash, so let them reside in the garage with intentions to ‘properly’ handle them later. Boy Scout Troop 111 relocated their flag collection container to the Delta Township Recycling Center to provide a solution for you and handle the proper retirement of all American flags.
The kiosk was originally constructed as part of Leonard Robitaille’s Eagle Project several years ago. Leonard, though autistic, put a lot of work into its construction with the help of many scouts and adults from his Troop. Congressman Mike Rogers and other dignitaries participated in the original dedication at the car wash on Elmwood. It has been at several Delta Township locations but now resides in a logical location with access to all.
All you have to do is drop the flag in the slot on the side, and the Scouts from Troop 111 will ensure it is included in one of their formal flag retirement ceremonies. Many of the flags are retired during their week as the Governor’s Honor Guard each summer at Mackinac Island. Their most recent ceremony was held on Veteran’s Day with over 100 flags retired with proper dignity.
Troop 111 has served the Delta/Waverly area for over 50 years and meets Monday evenings at 6:30 at First United Methodist Church if you are interested in more information.
For more information on programs, or for any other questions pertaining to recycling, please contact the Clerk’s Office at 517-323-8500.
