Eaton, Ingham and Clinton County 911 Dispatch centers are all utilizing what3words to precisely locate incidents when emergency assistance is needed.

What is what3words?

What3words has divided the globe into 10 ft squares and given each one a unique three-word identifier. It means any precise location can be communicated with just three words.

For example, ///narrate.optical.carry will take you to Arizona’s Horseshoe Bend overlook of the Colorado River.

Even when you’re totally offline, without a data or cellular connect ion, you can still find the 3 words for your location and navigate to other locations. This is because the app uses a GPS signal to work, which has near-universal coverage wherever you are in the world.

Without phone signal, the app functions the same as when you have no data connection: you can view the location of any what3words address you enter. You can also navigate to it using compass mode.

Locate incidents faster:

what3words gives callers a precise way to communicate exactly where assistance is needed, saving precious time.

what3words is also available to over 4,800 Emergency Communications Centers across the US via RapidSOS, CAD vendors and other tools.

As well as the free app for iOS and Android, what3words is available online at what3words.com

See more information at https:// what3words.com/news/emergency/ three-words-to-tell-us-public-safetyteams-exactly-where-you-are

Vending licenses are NOT required for groups representing a school, religious organization, or charitable organization which are classified non-profit for federal internal revenue purposes. A license is also not required if the vendor leaves a brochure at a resident’s home and does not knock or engage the resident in any capacity.

Preregistered vendors are listed on the township website, www.deltami.gov.

Residents should ask to see the Delta Township issued license if they are approached by a vendor if the license is not visible.

Mailbox Thefts

Recently, there has been an increase in mailbox thefts in Eaton County, especially in residential areas that cater to those 65 and older.

The Eaton County Sheriff’s Office and Delta Township would like to remind residents to be extra diligent when reviewing and sending mail.

Below are some quick tips to help you avoid mailbox theft:

• Be sure to pick up your mail daily and as close to delivery time as possible.

• A flag up on your mailbox is an indicator that a payment is awaiting pick up.

• If sensitive information or payments are coming and going from your residence, it is best to go directly to the post office.

• Sign up for informed delivery by visiting informeddelivery.usps.com to get daily digest emails that preview your mail scheduled to arrive soon and see images of your incoming letter-sized mail

To report a mailbox theft, please call the non-emergency line for the Eaton County Central Dispatch at 372-8217.

RAVE ALERTS

RAVE Alert is the official emergency alert notification system used by Eaton County to send text, email, and voice messages out to the community during an emergency.

SMART911

Smart911 is also an official system used by Eaton County. It allows people to create their own personal safety profile. People can provide as much or as little information in their personal safety profile as they want. Information from your personal safety profile is available to 911 dispatchers and emergency first responders for only 45 minutes during an emergency. Some types of information that people may want to share in an emergency situation are their medical conditions, emergency contacts, preferred providers, etc.

You can sign-up for free online for both of these services (message and data rates may apply).

Please visit Eaton County's web page for more information:

Burning of yard waste or use of a burning barrel is only allowed in areas zoned agricultural.

CAMPFIRE SAFETY

A roaring fire is both a success, and a responsibility. It is your job to properly maintain and extinguish your campfire so that future campers can do the same.

As you’re enjoying your campfire, remember these safety tips:

Maintaining Your Campfire

As you’re enjoying your campfire, remember these safety tips:

Once you have a strong fire going, add larger pieces of dry wood to keep it burning steadily

Keep your fire to a manageable size

Make sure children and pets are supervised when near the fire

Never leave your campfire unattended

Never cut live trees or branches from live trees

Extinguishing Your Campfire

When you’re ready to put out your f ire and call it a night, follow these guidelines:

Allow the wood to burn completely to ash

Pour lots of water on the fire, drown ALL embers, not just the red ones

Pour until hissing sound stops

Stir the campfire ashes and embers with a shovel

Scrape the sticks and logs to remove any embers

Stir and make sure everything is wet and they are cold to the touch If you do not have water, use dirt. Mix enough dirt or sand with the embers. Continue adding and stirring until all material is cool. Remember: do NOT bury the fire as the fire will continue to smolder and could catch roots on fire that will eventually get to the surface and start a wildfire. REMEMBER: If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave!

Don’t Burn Dangerous Things!

Never burn aerosol cans or pressurized containers. They may explode.

Never put glass in the fire pit. Glass does not melt away; it only heats up and shatters. Broken slivers of glass are dangerous.

Aluminum cans do not burn. In fact, the aluminum only breaks down into smaller pieces. Inhaling aluminum dust can be harmful to your lungs.

What To Do With A Worn American Flag

We all know that an American flag should be retired with dignity, but what should we do with one that has been tattered by the wind over time. Many of us know not to dispose of worn flags in the trash, so they reside in the garage with intentions to ‘properly’ handle them later. Boy Scout Troop 111 relocated their flag collection container to the Delta Township Recycling Center to provide a solution for you and handle the proper retirement of all American flags.

The kiosk was originally constructed as part of Leonard Robitaille’s Eagle Project several years ago. Leonard, though autistic, put a lot of work into its construction with the help of many scouts and adults from his Troop. Former Congressman Mike Rogers and other dignitaries participated in the original dedication at the car wash on Elmwood. It has been at several Delta Township locations but now resides in a logical location with access to all.

All you have to do is drop the flag in the slot on the side, and the Scouts from Troop 111 will ensure it is included in one of their formal flag retirement ceremonies. Many of the flags are retired during their week as the Governor’s Honor Guard each summer at Mackinac Island.

Troop 111 has served the Delta/Waverly area for over 50 years.
