Lee Delaronde, Rachaad Knights Winning in Bunches

Hot trainer wins six, jockey wins four, Morse and Badaloo score at 54-1

Rachaad Knights won the 5th race on Monday in a downpour aboard Maclean's Bella for trainer Jamie Hartmann. Knights won four races on the week to lead all jockeys. (Jason Halstead / Assiniboia Photo)

Lightning, thunder and heavy rain forced the cancellation of the final two races on Monday night, but the fireworks went off without a hitch, and there was another explosion in the last race on Wednesday night.

Rachaad Knights was the hot jockey on the week with four winners as he continued to live up to the potential three-time leading jockey Antonio Whitehall told us about earlier. Knights won the second race on Monday aboard Prairie Drifter ($6.60) for trainer Devon Gittens and the fifth and final race during a downpour on Macleans Bella ($4.40) for trainer Jamie Hartmann.

Jockey Renaldo Cumberbatch notched his 500th career win aboard Eagle Express for trainer Lee Delaronde on Tuesday. Congratulations! (Jason Halstead / Assiniboia Photo)

Knights went on to win the sixth race on Tuesday aboard Runtoday ($9.60) for trainer Will Tourangeau and added another victory for the same trainer in the first race on Wednesday on Lab Rat ($2.80). The hot apprentice now sits in a tie for second in the standings with 16 wins, four back of leading rider Prayven Badrie, who is having an excellent season with 20 victories so far.

Three-time leading rider Antonio Whitehall (15 wins) is next followed by Ronald Ali (14) and Renaldo Cumberbatch (13). Cumberbatch also notched his 500th career win in the fifth race on Tuesday aboard longshot Eagle Express ($21.00) for trainer Lee Delaronde, who was the hottest trainer on the week with six wins. And take note of the great prices on his horses.

Trainer Murray Duncan and jockey Dwight Lewis teamed up to win their first race of the meeting with Salto del Lupo in the 2nd race on Tuesday. Well done! (Jason Halstead / Assiniboia Photo)

Delaronde won the fourth race on Monday with Smart Call ($18.30), scored a hat trick on Tuesday with Getcha ($5.30) in the first race, Victory Line ($7.60) in the third, and the aforementioned Eagle Express in the sixth, and followed up with two more victories on Wednesday with S C Angel ($9.6) in the fourth race and Magnolia Speed ($12.10) in the sixth.

Delaronde has now moved into third in the standings with nine wins since taking over the training of Jerry Gourneau’s stable, and with the help of assistant trainer Madison Tirk and her crew, it won’t be long before they catch trainer Devon Gittens, who has 10 wins.

Captive Kitten explodes home late at 54-1 to win the 7th race on Wednesday, giving jockey Douglas Badaloo his first win at Assiniboia Downs. Congratulations! (Jason Halstead / Assiniboia Photo)

Trainer Murray Duncan teamed up with jockey Dwight Lewis to get their first wins of the meeting with Salto Del Lupo ($3.30) in the second race on Tuesday, and trainer Victoria Morse joined forces with jockey Douglas Badaloo to get their first wins of the meeting in dramatic fashion in the final race on Wednesday with the longest shot on the board.

Captive Kitten ($110.70) came flying home from last to first to win the seventh race on Wednesday, giving Badaloo his first ever win at Assiniboia Downs, and capped off a whopping $1 Pick 4 of $6,237.70.

A replay worth watching!

Last weekend’s Marine Stakes (G3) brought the lightly-raced gelding Essex Serpent squarely into the picture for the 165th King’s Plate on August 17 and strengthened the hand of trainer Mark Casse for Canada’s biggest race. The fillies may also have something to say about the Plate again this year, as the Oaks winner is automatically considered a Plate factor. More from the Canadian Thoroughbred here.

Handicapping Derbies in Indiana and Iowa

Kentucky Derby runners back in action at Horseshoe Indianapolis, Prairie Meadows

They're not as rich and prestigious as the Kentucky Derby (G1), but the $300,000 Indiana Derby (G3) at Horseshoe Indianapolis and the $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows this Saturday have drawn Kentucky Derby alumni and could have an impact on the second half of the 2024 racing season. More on both races from the BloodHorse here.

At one time the Assiniboia Downs Inaugural Handicap was one of the premier stakes races at the local track. For the longest time it was an opening day feature that kicked-off the Downs stakes race calendar. The race was a sprint that was always exciting and seemed to set the pace for the season that followed. Click here for Bob’s take on the 45-year history of “The Inaugural.”
