December is here and it's a month of lists... to do lists, lists for Santa, shopping lists. What's on our wish list here at WMNR Fine Arts Radio? Your input! We have two shows programmed for you, nay by you, in December. On December 16, Dominique Johnson of
Friday Morning Classics presents holiday requests from listeners. Let us know what piece of classical music truly rings in the season for you and then join Dominique on Friday, December 16 from 8:00 am to noon.
Call the station at 203-268-9667, email us at comments@wmnr.org, find us on Facebook
or tweet us @WMNR_Radio.
If it's a certain jazz piece that means Christmas to you, you're bound to hear it on Christmas at
The Night
Café with Will Duchon on Friday, December 23 at 10:00 pm. Will invites listeners to call 203-701-9627 and record their holiday greetings on the line for Will to share with their fellow listeners. Whether you're a Night Café regular with a standing order and a favorite table or a new listener who has just discovered this hour of jazz vocals, lend your voice to the festive cacaphony.
Can't tune in live during Dominique and Will's shows to hear your request or greeting? Remember, a rolling week of archived audio is kept on our website. Will's blog also has links to a catalog of his archived programs.
As we do each year, in mid-December we will email you a schedule of each holiday program planned, up to and including our traditional January 1st Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Day concert. Keep an eye on your in-box, as between the family e-cards and sales promos will be details about Garrett Stack's "Angel Hair & Tinsel: Another Baby Boomer's Christmas," Dick Hageman's "Christmas Gems," H. William Stine's "Turntable For One Christmas Party," Evening at the Opera's "Amahl and the Night Visitors," other holiday specials we air each year, plus fresh additions to the seasonal roster.

December 17 marks the Baptism of Ludwig van Beethoven, born this month in Bonn in 1770. Though no official record of his birthdate exists, what does remain is a vast body of unmatched composition and a day rarely goes by on WMNR Fine Arts Radio without a piece of his work broadcast. As he does each December, Fred Velardi of Tuesday Morning Classics will feature the master composer all month. Fred tells us he will start with the First Symphony on December 6 and end with the Ninth on December 27. In between, join us each Tuesday from 8:00 am to noon for the Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Op.58, Violin Concerto in D Op. 61, Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor Op. 57, and more jewels from Beethoven's oeuvre.

All of us at WMNR Fine Arts Radio, volunteer broadcasters, staff members, board operators, phone and library volunteers, want to thank all of you who supported the station financially this year. WMNR is one of only 40 public radio stations in the country whose mission is primarily classical music and we are the only such station in southern New England. You've made possible a listening experience that also includes opera, choral works, jazz, Big Band, Broadway, Great American Songbook, Baby Boomer pop, folk and more. All music aired is not only the best of its genre, but it is also music that is a rarity on terrestrial radio.
In 2016 your tax deductible contributions made it possible for us to improve the capacity and quality of our streaming service for our online listeners. Your donations not only went into technical improvements, but directly funded feature programming such as our 2016 live Tanglewood Music Festival broadcasts. This year, you funded outreach to our local community with several Fine Arts Forum programs featuring local musicians, performances and events. A calendar year at WMNR means 8,760 hours of music without news or commercial interruption, all made possible because you responded to an appeal letter, donated online, called during an on-air fundraising week, or established a sustaining membership.
In the course of our year, we received financial support from 3,013 individuals in 23 states and Great Britain. Most gratifying to us, in 2016 we received donations from 315 new members who contributed to WMNR for the very first time. We also increased our number of sustaining members by 15%. Sustaining members insure that the station will have reliable, predictable support for the future. Our gratitude goes out to all of you who are not just listeners, but valued members of the team it takes for WMNR Fine Arts Radio to provide the timeless, vibrant music it has for 35 years.
