Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction and Design Updates
In November, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:



Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Baron Cameron Avenue:
  • Continued noise barrier post installation and storm sewer work between Reston Avenue and Reston Parkway.
  • Earth-moving and grading activities between Reston Avenue and Utterback Store Road continued.

Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way
  • Continued earth-moving operations between Baron Cameron Avenue and Carpers Farm Way.
  • Finished cement-treated aggregate and base asphalt placement and completed curb and gutter along eastbound Route 7 between Baron Cameron Avenue and Carpers Farm Way.


  • Stage 2 construction pending right-of-way acquisition.


  • Continued earth-moving activities between Carpers Farm Way and Colvin Forest Drive.
  • Started earth-moving activities between Difficult Run and Faulkner Drive.
  • Built temporary access road to the sewer pump station near Difficult Run.
  • Completed sheet pile installation in the Colvin Run area east of Carpers Farm Way.


  • Continued storm sewer installation for Route 7 westbound lanes between Faulkner Drive and Trotting Horse Lane.  
  • Placed cement-treated aggregate, installed underdrain, placed base asphalt and commenced curb and gutter installation along westbound Route 7 between Faulkner Drive and Trotting Horse Lane.  
  • Performed cement stabilization of the subgrade, placed cement-treated aggregate, installed underdrain, placed base asphalt and completed curb and gutter installation between Lewinsville Road and Jarrett Valley Drive.

Design work continues for lighting and landscaping. Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.

Upcoming Work
Construction activities along Route 7 will be ongoing through the winter months, and additional traffic changes will occur. Please see the project website for information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.

Work in the Colvin Run/Difficult Run area is ongoing, and public access to the Gerry Connolly Cross County Trail will be maintained.
