The Little One: A Members' Exhibition

ArtsWorcester West Gallery and online

An annual favorite is brought down to scale in The Little One, the ninth iteration of this members' exhibition. Delight in miniature artworks by over 140 artist members, which showcase a diverse range of media, technique, and subject. All ringing in at ten inches or less, these works demonstrate how small works can pack a major punch.

Great gifts come in small packages! You're sure to find something for the art lovers on your list with this fantastic show.

Joan Ryan: Myth Busters

ArtsWorcester East Gallery and online

Nostalgia is an important part of the American legacy. Its pervasive influence has defined much of the post-modern American identity. In Myth Busters, Ryan juxtaposes imagery depicting American culture and history--cartoons, childhood fairy tales, and political iconography--and confronts the fear and denial of Post-War World II America. The exhibition takes the form of a wall installation, in which large-scale charcoal drawings are set against custom-painted gallery walls, giving the illusion of American nostalgia ripping into present time and space.

The re-representation of historically familiar images challenges the viewer to critique traditional stereotypes of cultural identity. By examining images of identity through our cultural myths, Ryan brings into question the belief system through which our society sees the world. Her work questions our manufactured desire for a fictitious past while revealing the complexity of our contemporary culture.

When exhibitions are on view, gallery hours run Thursdays through Sundays, 12-5 PM.

Website Critique Group
Tuesday 12/7 5pm
If you’re an artist, you probably have some experience with the value of critique. A second, third, or tenth set of eyes on your work can provide valuable insight on how our work is perceived, aka how a viewer or audience member is connecting with what we create. In this Artist to Artist session, we’ll turn our powerful critiquing skills toward artist websites! We’ll examine the sites with an eye toward improvements that will facilitate a deeper connection with our work, a better user experience, and increased performance on the various platforms that we depend on to connect with people these days.

All Workshops:

$15 for nonmembers, $5 discounted registrations for members (we also offer a free registration option for those who are facing financial hardship.

All workshops are online events. Registration is required prior to the workshop in order to receive the Zoom link to join us.

Those who register will also receive a link to a video recording of the meeting in case they missed anything!

Dodge and Burn
A juried members' exhibition

Submission Deadline: December 2, 2021
Notifications: by December 16, 2021
Drop off period: January 6 - January 9, 2021
Exhibition run: January 20 - February 27, 2022

Juried by: Beth Kantrowitz, independent curator and art consultant, Co-Director of Drive-By Projects

"Dodging" and "burning" are the ways photographers in the darkroom either lighten or darken different areas of an image. This technique has since been modernized in digital editing software like Photoshop. The resulting effect is a heightened visual contrast.

For this juried exhibition, we’re looking for contrast within a single wall-hanging artwork. Contrast may be visual or thematic. Think light and dark, big and small, textured and smooth, etc.

This is a call for wall-hanging artwork. All media are welcome, including but not limited to painting, photography, digital, fine craft, and video. Artwork must not exceed 48” x 48”, including frame, and may not extend more than 12” from the wall.

This is a juried exhibition, meaning that the juror will consider all eligible submissions and select certain artworks to be shown at ArtsWorcester. All Artist Members may submit up to two pieces for consideration. The contrast must be evident within a single work, not between your two submissions.

Please contact alice@artsworcester.org with any questions about the call or submission requirements.
