Nashville training center 80% complete
The 25,000-square-foot training center under construction in La Vergne, Tennessee, near Nashville is scheduled to be complete on Jan. 20, with a grand opening slated for March.

The new training center will replace a 7,000-square-foot facility with 5,000 square feet of training space. By contrast, the new building consists of 20,000 square feet of training space and 5,000 square feet of office and administrative areas.

SSMRC Sisters in the Brotherhood awards tool scholarship to Women in Construction Program graduate
The SSMRC Sisters in the Brotherhood and two of its partners presented a scholarship tool package on Dec. 6 valued at more than $1,000 to Alisha King, a recent graduate of the Moore Community House Women in Construction Program in Biloxi, Mississippi.

The SSMRC funded the scholarship tools, and DEWALT made a donation of tools to support the Women in Construction Program and the scholarship package. The scholarship and donation are part of the Southeast Construction Owners & Associates Roundtable’s Craft Trades Scholarship (SCOAR) Program.

SSMRC Sisters in the Brotherhood Committee hosting holiday toy drive

The Southern States Millwrights Sisters in the Brotherhood Committee is looking to bring joy to children and families in need this holiday season through its holiday toy drive. 
 
A gift of toys, games, and other items can make a big difference to children and families in need and sure bring a smile to their face. Donations may be dropped off at various locations across the Southern District now through December 20.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
December Member Spotlight from Local 729

Local 729 member, Marvin Carter, began his journey in the trade industry as a millwright in 1965, after completing the machinist program at the Vocational Technical School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. 

In 1967, Carter started his career at Exxon Mobile as a mechanist, while completing the 4-year apprenticeship program to begin working as a millwright machinist. In 2011, Carter made the courageous decision to join the union as a millwright. His decision was influenced by his work experience and desire to expand his knowledge and further his education in the trade industry.
