December 2022

Dear Friend,

First off, a great big THANK YOU to everyone who joined the movement and gave on GivingTuesday! Your generosity truly made a difference. In December the office will be busy preparing for next year and will be closed from Dec. 19, 2022 - Jan. 2, 2023. In the meantime, you can read about what we accomplished in 2022 in the Year-end Letter from Jennifer, the BCLT President. Not to brag, but it's pretty impressive. You will also find our '12 ways of Giving' and beautiful last-minute gift options for family and friends.

Even though the office will be closed at the end of the month, our volunteering opportunities and free tours are still happening! Especially our weekly beach cleanups on Monday mornings. Find all of the details in the volunteer section of this enewsletter.

Happy Holidays and New Year!

If you like our e-newsletters please consider sharing it with your friends and family. You can also follow us on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter to catch our weekly "Wildlife Wednesdays" and current events as we share with you what we see and find every week!

2022 Year-end Letter from the BCLT President

It's already the last month of 2022?! How time flies like the hunting Peregrine Falcon. As is customary at this time of year, we reflect on the past year and all the accomplishments BCLT made towards fulfilling our mission. It helps us set goals and plans for the new year. The Year-end Letter is a reminder to our members about the important work we do to care for Bolsa Chica that your donations directly support year after year. We truly couldn't restore, educate and protect Bolsa Chica without you. This letter is for you.

Green Heron by Jay Spring

Dec. Bird of the Month: Green Heron

This usually solitary bird can raise its dark crest and flick its tail when disturbed, while letting out an abrasive “kyowk.” Usually, it is camouflaged in its preferred habitat where it perches in trees or vegetation hanging over water. The Green Heron has non-contrasting colors of green, blue-gray and chestnut which blend with the water habitat. Look for this bird when it’s hunting, walking slowly in shallow water or standing still at the water’s edge till a fish comes close enough for the heron to lunge forward to stab and grab it.

18” long; 26” wingspan; 7 oz.

  • Enjoy the flowers, but please do not pick them.
  • Do not feed the animals.
  • Do not litter. Please pack out your trash, including food scraps.
  • No bikes.
  • No dogs.
  • No drones.
  • Enjoy being with nature!
  • If you see any BCLT Stewards working along the trail, say hi! We are happy to answer any questions.
