Healthy Habits

Did you know hydration is just as important in the winter as it is any other time of year? We tend to forget because, well, we are cold and not looking to gulp down water the same way we are in peak summer months. Some ways to prevent winter dehydration without an ice-cold glass of water:

Warm it: warm water with lemon or decaffeinated/herbal teas will hydrate and soothe.

Slurp it: brothy soups (think clear, not creamy) are a great way to stay hydrated.

Eat it: Oranges, grapes, melons, leafy greens all have lots of hydration in them already.

Some indicators that you might be dehydrated are dark colored urine, headaches, muscle aches and fatigue. While not a guarantee of dehydration, these symptoms could be an indication to hydrate.

Hello from Kate

The thumbtacks that have been holding up our calendars are hardly bearing the cumulative weight of 11 months of birthdays, holidays, and appointments past; the stripped branches of our elms, maples and oaks stand in stark contrast to the crisp blue skies; we find a crumpled old receipt, or if lucky, a dollar or two in the pocket of our coats which are the only creatures I know to hibernate all summer; and warm mugs are gripped with two full hands, no longer in need of heat resistant handles.

Before we allow the winter shades of grey to overtake our landscapes and mindsets there are these cozy, small details that matter. They remind us that we have the privilege to experience seasons. We have the excuse to tuck in, be a little more introspective. That even in these darker, colder days there is a warmth and peacefulness unique to this time of year.

We refer to our daughter, Adelaide, as our winter baby. She was born late November and chronically wilts in the summer and blooms in the winter. She runs outside barefoot far too long into the calendar year. Every hat, glove and jacket worn to school is found weeks later in lost and found as she sheds layers throughout the day. In lieu of summertime hot dogs and ice cream, old movies and chapter books are devoured with an insatiable appetite. I relish these days. Trust that come March I will be singing a different tune, but for now, I accept these shifts willingly, gratefully. I know there is much excitement, busyness and distraction this month, but above all, I hope the peace and warmth of December finds its way to you in all the small ways that matter.
