Koekje, Cooky, or Cookie? A History of American Christmas Cookies | |
Koekje, Cooky, or Cookie? A History of American Christmas Cookies
Monday, December 11, 7pm
Zoom Program
Why do the Brits call them biscuits and we call them cookies? The answer lies in the 17th century Dutch colony of New Netherland. But cookies have a peculiar history. Once the purview only of the wealthy, their flavors, shapes, and textures have changed over time. Influenced by changing technologies, household labor, slavery, social status, agricultural innovations, and immigration, cookies have become the standard American Christmastime treat. But how did we get there?
In this illustrated lecture, including multiple historic recipes, food historian Sarah Wassberg Johnson discusses the history of cookies in America, including their Medieval backgrounds, Christmas traditions through the ages, the influence of immigrant foodways in the United States, and why we eat so many cookies during the holiday season.
Register here and be sure to include your email in your registration so we can send you the zoom link.
This program is a collaboration between the Millbrook, Putnam, Staatsburg and Warner Libraries.

Art Exhibit Flora and Fauna, Portraits in Nature by Donna Calcavecchio
November-December
Donna Calcavecchio has a BFA with a major in illustration from Manhattan’s School of Visual Arts and has worked as a graphic designer for the past 30 years, winning several design awards along the way. Her expertise encompasses all aspects of graphic design, including publication and website design. Several years ago her interest in illustration was reignited after taking a workshop with world-renowned botanical illustrator Wendy Hollander. One workshop led to many more with Wendy, and then more with equally renowned Carol Woodin. Several classes at the New York Botanical Garden followed, the latest being an exceptionally informative, challenging, and rewarding class in plant morphology with the late Dick Rauh.
| |
A Hudson Valley native, Donna became fascinated by all things in nature as a child and credits her cousin Bill’s nature walks with stimulating her interest. She has an extensive collection of somewhat peculiar but interesting rocks, seashells, twigs, wasp galls, bark and lichen, acorns, even some dried leaves and blossoms. There’s always something on hand to sketch. Her main interest has always centered on drawing botanicals with colored pencils. However, when she was asked by Scenic Hudson to do a series of drawings in pen and ink for a new website, the unfamiliar medium proved to be an exciting departure from her usual go-to pencils and was quite challenging as it included native flora as well as native fauna; hence the name of this show: Flora and Fauna, Portraits in Nature.

The book for November is The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O' Farrell
Lucrezia, third daughter of the grand duke, is comfortable with her obscure place in the palazzo: free to wonder at its treasures, observe its clandestine workings, and devote herself to her own artistic pursuits. But when her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding to the ruler of Ferrara, Modena and Reggio, Lucrezia is thrust unwittingly into the limelight: the duke is quick to request her hand in marriage, and her father just as quick to accept on her behalf. Having barely left girlhood behind, Lucrezia must now enter an unfamiliar court whose customs are opaque and where her arrival is not universally welcomed.

The book for December is A Share In Death by Deborah Crombie
"A week's holiday in a luxurious Yorkshire time-share is just what Scotland Yard's Superintendent Duncan Kincaid needs. But the discovery of a body floating in the whirlpool bath ends Kincaid's vacation before it's begun. Despite a distinct lack of cooperation from the local constabulary, Kincaid's keen sense of duty won't allow him to ignore the heinous crime, impelling him to send for his enthusiastic young assistant, Sergeant Gemma James. But the stakes are raised dramatically when a second murder occurs, and Kincaid and James find themselves in a determined hunt for a fiendish felon who enjoys homicide a bit too much." -- From goodreads.

Friday, December 15
12:15pm, Activity Room
Registration Required
During this holiday season we are celebrating cultural and religious traditions from around the world. Members can choose recipes that celebrate our diversity, be it Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Yule, Christmas or Bohdi Day. With so many holidays during this festive time of year, we have plenty to choose from.
The Cooks & Books group is a cookbook group. We meet the 3rd Friday of each month and take turns choosing a cookbook or theme to cook from. Each member then makes a chosen dish to bring to the meeting where we feast and discuss the cookbook and recipes. It’s a whole lot of fun and great food.
Participation is limited so if you are interested in joining this group, please contact Sarah Robertson at programs@stoneridgelibrary.org or call (845) 687-7023 ext. 8.
