A message from Charles Dunlap, Indiana Bar Foundation President & CEO

As we move into December, the closing chapters of 2023 prompt reflection on the many things I am extremely thankful for at the Indiana Bar Foundation. This list includes the Foundation's dedicated supporters, volunteers, donors, partners, and employees, with special appreciation for one individual preparing to retire from her full-time role with the Foundation after nearly a decade of service.

Marilyn Smith's impact on the Foundation transcends her accomplishments in access to justice. Her professionalism and exceptional ability to unite diverse groups have played a pivotal role in achieving significant goals. Throughout her tenure, Marilyn has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to fostering collaboration and unity among legal professionals, community organizations, and government agencies, earning her significant credit for many successes in the civil legal assistance field, both within Indiana and nationwide.

Marilyn's professionalism has served as a guiding light, setting a high standard for ethical conduct and dedication to the pursuit of justice. Her ability to navigate complex legal landscapes with integrity and poise has earned her the respect of colleagues and stakeholders. Marilyn's transformative vision has been a beacon for countless Hoosiers in desperate need as she approached challenges in legislative discussions, partnership negotiations, and educational initiatives with a professionalism that elevated the Foundation and the state of Indiana.

A standout quality of Marilyn's leadership is her skill in bringing together diverse groups with different perspectives and priorities to achieve shared goals. Recognizing that access to justice requires a collaborative approach, Marilyn adeptly facilitated partnerships between the legal community, nonprofit organizations, and government entities. She epitomizes a trusted, respected leader with a heart for service, demonstrating practical intelligence to turn transformative visions into reality. Marilyn's ability to bridge gaps and foster understanding among diverse stakeholders has been pivotal in creating a unified front against systemic barriers to justice.

Under Marilyn's guidance, the Foundation has become a collaboration hub where professionals from various backgrounds work synergistically. This collaborative spirit enhances program effectiveness and instills a shared responsibility for advancing access to justice. Marilyn's talent for building bridges and creating alliances strengthens the Foundation's position as a force for positive change in the legal landscape.

The success of initiatives promoting access to justice often hinges on building consensus and navigating intersecting interests. Marilyn's inclusive leadership style ensures the Foundation's efforts are interconnected with the broader legal community and societal stakeholders. By fostering an environment where different groups find common ground, Marilyn facilitates a comprehensive and holistic approach to addressing the challenges those seeking justice face.

Reflecting on Marilyn's tenure, her professionalism and collaborative approach have been catalysts for positive transformative change. Her legacy, marked by tangible achievements and enduring relationships, positions the Indiana Bar Foundation for continued success in its mission long after her retirement. Marilyn's example inspires a new generation of legal professionals to embrace a holistic and inclusive approach to addressing the challenges of access to justice, ultimately working towards a more just, accessible, and responsive legal system for all Hoosiers in need. Please join me in celebrating Marilyn's extraordinary contributions to creating a better Indiana.

The Foundation congratulates Senior Counsel Marilyn Smith, who received IndyBar's "Unsung Hero" award. Marilyn will retire at the end of this month after nearly a decade with the Foundation. Interest in IndianaLegalHelp.org Remains Strong

Nearly a year after the launch of a redesigned IndianaLegalHelp.org website, the Civil Legal Assistance team has provided more than 30 training demonstrations to individuals and groups around the state interested in learning about website features. Most recently, Mike Commons (pictured), Indiana Legal Help Manager, attended a Indiana Library Federation Conference where he led the session “Indiana Legal Help-How Libraries Can Support Publicly Accessible Legal Information.” Libraries are key Foundation partners with almost half of our 150 Indiana Legal Help kiosks located in libraries around the state.

Civic Education

We the People State Finals Begin December 12

The 2023 Indiana Bar Foundation We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution Middle and High School State Finals will occur on December 12 and 13 at the historic Union Station and Crowne Plaza-Downtown Indianapolis. More than 700 students representing 14 middle and 14 high schools will participate.

There are a few opportunities for those willing to judge the middle school competition on Tuesday, December 12. Please complete the Volunteer Registration Form or contact Director of Civic Education Tim Kalgreen for details. Of note, again this year, the United States District Court Southern District of Indiana will host a Naturalization ceremony on December 12 during the middle school state finals.

Thank you to the educators, parents, and school communities for supporting these outstanding students. Foundation volunteers, donors and sponsors play a vital role in ensuring the competitions run smoothly and have the necessary financial support to make Indiana’s We the People program one of the nation’s best.

Banner Program Creates Pride for We the People Schools

The Foundation is proud to provide all schools competing in the We the People regional competition with a large banner to hang in a central location at their schools. With the banners being hung prominently at schools around the state, the Foundation aims to instill We the People pride to the whole school and not just within a single classroom. The Foundation is proud of all our We the People schools and looks to continue expanding into more schools around the state. To learn more about We the People, visit the Foundation’s website.
