We had a very informative meeting last month in which a top cybersecurity expert, Loren Aquino , presented ways in which we can protect ourselves and our computers from scams and website hackers. The Top 10 Online Safety Tips we should heed are:
 
1. Think before you click
2. Get anti-virus protection and keep it updated
3. Keep your computer software and applications updated
4. Backup your pictures and documents
5. Create strong, unique passwords for every site
6. Be careful on public WiFi connections
7. Question what you see in emails and pop-ups
8. Download and stream from legal sites only
9. Do not post sensitive information on social media sites
10. Be mindful of email and phone call fraud attempts.

Good news for our Thrift Shop! The City and County of Honolulu has implemented a pilot project to provide security to curtail illegal homeless activity. Pawa'a In-Ha Park is one of the nine parks that were chosen in response to neighborhood concerns. We hope the new security measure is successful and that the City will continue the service after the evaluation period ends.
 
Happy Holidays! Assistance League of Hawaii got into the ho! ho! Christmas spirit by starting off with the Christmas Work Party weekend. The Thrift Shop was transformed into a Christmas Store in time for the November 5th preview. Thanks go out to all the little elves that made all the containers upstairs against the wall, in the former OSB room and the conference room disappear in a snap! Many items were sold.

Next month's Christmas Social will be at Laurelynn Berger's home on Wednesday, December 12, 2018. Although we work really hard at the Thrift Shop and Program Activities, this is one event where we can relax and enjoy each other's company. There's no meeting at this gathering, just a whole lot of fun and laughter!

As this is a social event, there is no meeting.This is a potluck affair. Based on the first letter of your last name , you will be asked to bring a salad, sandwiches or main dish, dessert or fruit.

Service Award Honorees

LaVonne Holmberg and Sandy Wells joined Debbie Muirhead in recognition of earning the President's Volunteer Service Award for 2018.
 
This is the premier volunteer service awards program in the United States, encouraging citizens to live a life of service through presidential gratitude and national recognition. The ladies have achieved the required number of 4,000 hours of cumulative service over the course of a lifetime. Congratulations to our three members who have earned the award this year.

Operation Wildlife

OWL Highlights

There were two Oahu school presentations. One was on November 19 at Palolo Elementary and the other on November 26 at Hahaione Elementary. Kathy Takemoto and Marge Fabre headed out to Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii on November 26 to 29.
 
December will be very busy with Palisades Elementary, Ala Wai Elementary, Kaahumanu Elementary. We need Operation Wildlife volunteers or will be forced to cancel.
 
We have new biofacts: seahorses, alligator skulls and a fox skull. Anyone interested in previewing our presentations, just call Kathy Takemoto so she can let the school know for parking spots.
 
Myrtle Ching-Rappa has been spreading her magic and helped decorate our lunch meeting tables. Floral arrangements provided by our Hospitality committee were arranged by Myrtle and Helen Taufa'asau also included the lovely placemats. The arrangements were purchased by our members.
 
Hope you can view our Waihee student artwork sent to Operation Wildlife as a thank you team members, Gerri Migita and Leilani Alcova who presented the program in Maui. There is a book of thank you notes from students in our OWL drawer.

Operation School Bell ®
Another great Operation School Bell® day for local Honolulu families. There were 171 students from Likelike, Kauluwela, Kuhio and Palolo Elementary schools who happily shopped for school clothes and shoes. We spent a total of $10,171.70. Purchases for the elementary students averaged $59. Excellent work by our member volunteers kept our young shoppers and their parents within our set range of expenses.

Operation School Bell made a positive impact on our local community.

Looking around at all of you doing your part to make our in-store day special for the children, makes a person really proud to be a member of Assistance League. There is a special bond that develops when a group pulls together for the betterment of others. You can all take pride in being a part of our series of very successful events which positively impacted children's lives.  Thanks for helping.

We are finished with the Walmart Keeaumoku in-store student shopping events for this school year.

The December 15 Operation School Bell In-Store Shopping event at Target in Kapolei has been postponed until February. Our next In-Store Shopping event for 150 students will be Saturday, January 26 at Target in Kapolei.  More details will follow in the January Newsletter. Please mark the date on your calendar if you would like to help out that day.

Lullaby Layette had a packing of onesies, diapers and newborn blankets on November 28 at my home in Kailua. In attendance were Pat Sandborn, Pat Dixon, Vickie Fay, Mary Kay Junk and Jane Winslow . 275 layettes were packaged for new born girls and boys. They will be delivered the first week of December to the maternity wards at Castle, Kapiolani and Kaiser hospitals.

Hale Kipa - Pat Dixon continues to provide assistance to youth aging out of Foster Care with purchases of cookware, glasses, kitchen towels, small microwaves and brooms. She is currently working with a few clients. We Care has been able to use the Target voucher for savings on some items.

Youth Outreach - Mary Kay Junk purchased boys and girls hygiene items, under garments, backpacks, etc. for delivery to homeless teens that drop into the shelter at Waikiki.

Production of Malama Bears was delayed in China due to shipping issues. 
We expect 900 Bears to arrive in Honolulu on December 5. We Care plans to package all the bears on a Monday at the Thrift Shop, date to be determined.

I used to think that selling our nice kitchenware and our lovely ladies blouses at $1.00 each was a very bad idea. However, recent sales have proved me wrong and on days we had such sales, we garnered around $1,500.

Nancy's cries for help on the schedule have frequently been answered. Thanks to all of you who so generously put in extra hours.

Christmas items have taken over the store but we have sold several thousands of dollars worth with not too much left to come down. We will soon be re-arranging things downstairs to make room for some nice furniture that Betty Burrell has managed to obtain for us.

Please continue to check the calendar to see if you can put in some extra time if needed. Remember to let Nancy know if your schedule changes. Nancy will be in the shop on a limited basis during her daughter's visit (Dec. 3 -14).

Come and spend some time with us at the Shop over the holidays.

As the year is nearing its end the Share Program keeps plugging along. We have donated $6,426 worth of goods to the community serving 3,960 individuals. My thanks to everyone and I wish you all a very happy holiday season.
