The Gift of Self Compassion
December 2016

The month of giving is upon us! December brings with it the holidays of giving and generosity. While giving gifts to others is what we generally think of as the traditions of this season, I want to call our attention to something equally, and possibly, even more important:   Being generous and compassionate with ourselves.

When we board an airplane and listen to the safety speech,  they remind us that in case of an emergency, we should put on our own oxygen mask first and then assist others.  I'm always grateful for that little reminder. The truth is, that we can't give to others if we don't take care of ourselves first.  If we are depleted, or ill, we have nothing left to give!

I believe that Self Compassion is (or should be) at the core of our self-care practice. Dr. Kristin Neff, a pioneer in the field of Self Compassion research, believes that Self Compassion might even be more important to our overall well-being than Self Esteem.

In her blog article, Developing Self Compassion and Learning to Be Nicer to Ourselves, Bobbi Emel reveals 4 mythical beliefs about Self Compassion (and why we might resist being compassionate with ourselves) and follows up with 3 ways to cultivate Self Compassion.

Dr. Kristin Neff has put together a wonderful set of Self Compassion and Guided Meditation Exercises to help us nurture and care for our own well being.  I encourage you to look over this list and pick at least one to work with during this time of year that can sometimes be overwhelming and hectic.
I have been very busy this fall, teaching and speaking.  I recently spoke at the OAND Annual Convention on the topic,  "How Biography Becomes Biology: Childhood Trauma and Adult Disease."

Later in November I offered a Mindful Healing Yoga Vacation Retreat, at the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Retreat in the Bahamas. A lot of deep healing took place during this retreat and I was so honored to be part of the healing journey of those who joined me for this powerful experience.

I spend a lot of my time giving to others through my doctoring, teaching and mentoring which is my great joy and privilege.  As all healers, I sometimes struggle with taking good care of myself.

In the spirit of self-care and self compassion, I am taking a short vacation in Arizona for the first week in December, to indulge a personal passion of mine - playing golf! It is a trip I had to postpone for a year due to my back injury and surgery last November. As difficult as it is to carve out time for myself, I'm practicing what I preach and giving myself the gift of this time to relax, reflect and rejuvenate.

I wish you all a warm and wonderful holiday season! Remember to be generous and loving with yourself as you share with others.
Make sure and check my event calendar regularly for details on all my upcoming classes, lectures, workshops and Webinars.
