The Latest Lux News & Views!

Hello Friends,

I want to begin by expressing a heartfelt "wow" and a sincere thank you for your immediate responses to a single question about meter readers.

What I've obtained from this is that we, the residents, deeply care about our city. We value having a voice in its affairs, and we're willing to make temporary changes to assist our city in any way we can.

I recently posed the question:

‘To potentially save taxpayer money, I'm thinking about a temporary solution to our meter reading system and seeking your input.

Under this arrangement, residents would pay the same amount for three months based on an initial reading. The subsequent reading, three months later, would reflect actual usage and recalculate the average for the following three months. Monthly bills would remain consistent over this period.

This adjustment would allow our hardworking city employees to concentrate on repairing, replacing, and restoring faulty meters during the two months they are not engaged in meter reading duties. This initiative aims to be both efficient and cost-effective.

Would you be willing to support this? Please reply with Yes or No.”

Out of 368 responses, 351 individuals responded with a "yes," while 17 respondents expressed a "no." It's important to acknowledge that there were valid reasons behind some of the "no" responses.

These reasons included sentiments such as: "This issue should have been addressed long ago, and action is needed now," "I'm in the process of selling my house, and this change will result in additional paperwork at closing," "My meter reader is functioning properly, so why change?" "I rely on monthly readings to detect leaks in my home," and "How can usage be accurately estimated over a three-month period, particularly for seasonal residents?"

These concerns highlight the complexity of any issue and unfortunately, a simple question often doesn't lead to a simple solution. However, it served as a great starting point for generating input and thinking outside the box for potential solutions. Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that our city runs as smoothly as possible.

METER READERS

The vote to hire the three meter readers with the contract provided by Olameter Corporation of Waukesha, Wisconsin, passed unanimously. This contract is temporary, allowing the city to reduce the number of required employees and cancel the contract without incurring penalties. While it does entail a cost to the city ($275,000 was budgeted in 2024 fiscal budget), it enables our city staff to focus on repairing faulty readers instead of spending time on meter reading duties.

In an effort to estimate the duration required for repairs until external meter readers are no longer necessary, I calculated approximately six months, accounting for ongoing breakdowns of meters.

Additionally, I proposed a proactive measure to replace the batteries of the remaining functioning meters as they near the end of their lifespan. This preemptive action aims to prevent future breakdowns. The cost for replacing the two batteries needed per meter is approximately $140 each.

These initiatives represent prudent steps to address the current issues while proactively mitigating potential future challenges.

FUTURE SURVEYS

In the near future, I plan to pose survey questions once again to gather input from our residents. I value all feedback and encourage everyone, including those who may disagree with me, to share their alternate solutions and ideas.

CITY ATTORNEY BILLS

I will persist in questioning the city attorney's bills. If the city is covering these expenses, I am interested in under-standing who is assigning tasks to him and the outcomes of his research. While I acknowledge there may be some limitations on what he can disclose, sharing this information can help educate all of us on his findings. It's important to remember that he works for us, and thus, he should offer transparency in his findings.

In recent months, there has been a renewed emphasis on the Sunshine Law and its impact on council member communications. This increased scrutiny appears to be linked, at least in part, to the newsletters I've been sending out to you. While it may not be a universally popular opinion, I firmly believe in transparent and open government. Therefore, rest assured that I've diligently conducted my research, and nothing will deter me from maintaining open communication with the residents of Punta Gorda.

LET’S WORK TOGETHER FOR OUR COMMUNITY

Overall, I genuinely believe that each member of our council is striving to do what they believe is right. We all bring different perspectives and approaches to the table. My personal approach involves thorough reading, asking questions, and consistently seeking input from residents. I am committed to listening to your voices because I recognize that it is your trust that placed me on council in the first place.

CITIZENS ACADEMY AND SPOTLIGHT OF THE WEEK:

On Tuesday, I attended the Citizen’s Academy and gained valuable insights into the operations that keep our city running smoothly. The topic of utilities was particularly enlightening, and I found one of the handouts especially informative. This week's spotlight is dedicated to highlighting the key takeaways from these academy sessions. Additionally, I want to shed light on the issue of spam, as it's an important awareness topic for our residents.

TOWN HALL ON MONDAY!

Additionally, please keep in mind that our first evening town hall meeting will be held on this Monday night the 11th at 5:30 at the Punta Gorda Library. . Despite recognizing that this day may present conflicts for some of our residents, I believe it will still be a valuable gathering. I'm eager to hear input from those who work full-time and are unable to attend daytime meetings. Click Here or on the image below to RSVP.

Looking forward to seeing you all on Monday night at the

Town Hall meeting! It will be a lively and informative event

as you gather with your fellow Punta Gorda residents.
