RCCs in 2023: Boosting Regional Preparedness | |
|
In 2023, the Regional Collaboration Centres engaged regional stakeholders ahead of the first Global Stocktake to get on course towards the goals of the Paris Agreement. The six RCCs operate as partnerships in key regions, connecting networks, mobilizing stakeholders and enabling action.
The latest RCC Annual Report showcases activities by the Centres to boost preparedness for countries to implement the Paris Agreement and build a strong network of stakeholders. The Annual Report provides overarching highlights of the RCCs achievements, including at COP28 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Third Regional Dialogue of National Gender
Climate Change Focal Points

RCC EAS Africa partnered with UN Women and UNDP to host a key dialogue for gender equality in climate action. Held in Nairobi, Kenya on 16-18 April, the event engaged National Gender and Climate Change Focal Points from 32 countries.
This dialogue was a critical part of the RCC's capacity-building project, supported by the AfDB's Africa Climate Change Fund. With strong female participation of 119 women and 32 men, the event aimed to empower women negotiators and advance gender equality in climate discussions. Learn more here.

First East African Carbon Markets Forum Held in May | |

The RCC participated in the inaugural forum delivering a keynote on Translating Policy into Action: Advancing Article 6 Implementation in East Africa.
Governments shared milestones in carbon legislation, focusing on Paris Agreement implementation and local community benefits. Project developers highlighted challenges in implementation and market access, underscoring the need for collaborative platforms. Notably, the Carbon Market Association of Uganda was formed to engage with the government and advocate for supportive environments. More information available here.

Stakeholder Validation Workshop: Advancing Africa's Long-Term Low Emission Strategies (LT-LEDS) | |

RCC EAS Africa joined a three-day Stakeholder Validation Workshop in Douala, Cameroon, from April 24 to 26. The workshop focused on advancing Long-Term Low-Emission and Climate-Resilient Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) for Africa.
Despite Africa's vulnerability to climate change, only 9 out of 54 countries have communicated their plans to the UNFCCC. The workshop reviewed a study on challenges and opportunities for LT-LEDS, aiming to better align them with national climate commitments (NDCs). More details can be found here.

RCCs Support Next Generation of
National Climate Action Plans

Countries are preparing their third round of national climate action plans (NDCs), with a deadline of early 2025. To support them, UN Climate Change and partners are making information readily available to all stakeholders.
The Regional Collaboration Centres (RCCs) are working with UN agencies, development banks, and other experts to provide local support for building stronger, more ambitious NDCs. A dedicated UNFCCC webpage features six regional webinars hosted by RCCs. These webinars showcase the resources and guidance available to help countries develop robust and resilient climate plans.

The UN Climate Change secretariat, with support from RCC Asia-Pacific and RCC MENA and South Asia, delivered a successful NAP Expo 2024 in Dhaka, Bangladesh from 22 to 25 April 2024.
The NAP Expo 2024 was hosted by the Government of Bangladesh and emphasized that National Adaptation Plans, or NAPs, are crucial to climate risk response and drivers of economic growth. The Expo underscored the importance of transboundary adaptation strategies, stakeholder inclusion, and diverse financial resources for NAP implementation. A first for the NAP Expo, a NAP Exchange Hub showcased high-impact adaptation initiatives and facilitated the exchange of national experiences.

Call for input on capacity-building for NDCs 3.0 | |

NDCs are a core part of our collective ambition to tackle climate change. But how to prepare them? How to implement them? What are the resources that support this work?
We are building a database of capacity-building activities tools, handbooks, case studies, courses, and more to enhance the capacity of countries in the preparation and implementation of their NDCs. Survey on 2030 Climate Solutions:
Regional Priorities

The High-Level Champions and Marrakech Partnership, in collaboration with the UNFCCC secretariat and its RCCs, are inviting non-Party stakeholders across all regions to share perspectives via this survey by end of June.
The survey looks at priority solutions, specific barriers/challenges and enabling conditions of adaptation and mitigation in the framework of the 2030 Climate Solutions, which summarizes what actors must and can do to deliver the systems change needed by 2030. Inputs received will:
- Help ensure implementation of the 2030 Climate Solutions reflects the context and needs of all regions and is effective, inclusive, participatory, and accountable
- Effectively contributes to solutions to the design of the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions, the NDCs 3.0

High-Level Champions, Marrakech Partnership, and Sport for Climate Action at SB 60 session | |
|
The SB 60 session from 3 to 13 June 2024 in Bonn, Germany, will feature a programme of events and engagements by the High-Level Champions and Marrakech Partnership. The programme aims to coalesce and activate the community around priority areas towards COP 29, showcase and amplify progress and solutions from non-Party stakeholders using existing frameworks and tools such as the 2030 Climate Solutions, and inspire and support Party efforts in setting the enabling conditions at COP 29 for the next generation of 1.5C-aligned NDCs.
Stay tuned to this space for updates on these events. Additionally, the Sports for Climate Action event will showcase the Euro 2024 case, demonstrating how football can make climate action accessible and serve as a powerful platform for raising awareness and driving change.
