For over 50 years, the driving force of the Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association has been to have a diverse, and thriving nursing workforce, resulting in healthcare that improves the quality of life for all. February marks the start of Black History Month in the US. Black History Month celebrates the rich cultural heritage, triumphs and adversities that are an undeniable part of our country's history.

Mary Eliza Mahoney

(1845-1926)

Mary Eliza Mahoney was the first Black registered nurse in the United States. In 1879, she graduated from a program in New England that required 16 hours of labor, seven days of the week. The program, which began with 40 students, only had 3 who graduated, Mahoney being one of them. She proved her determination and went on to blaze trails for future nurses. In 1908, Mary Eliza Mahoney helped to establish the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses. In recognition of her achievements, the American Nurses' Association created the Mary Mahoney Award, which is still considered one of the highest honors a nurse can receive. Today, the FNSNA remembers the historical achievements of Mary Eliza Mahoney and significant contributions to nursing and the nursing profession.

Relieving my financial stress with the help of this scholarship has meant the world to me. It has allowed me to focus on extracurriculars such as NSNA and my local SNA chapter. I have become the President of my local chapter and Director East of NSNA. I can spend more time helping the student nursing community and less time worrying about my financial situation.

I will use these opportunities to spread the word about how FNSNA can impact a student nurses journey.

Like many other people, I went to college after high school, unsure of what I really wanted to do with my career. An unexpected pregnancy led me to take a year off school, and then, life happened.

As a mother, the guilt of taking time and money away from your family to pursue education is very real. The demands on resources for a single-income family of five are seemingly endless. Receiving a scholarship has literally paved the way for me to finally be able to better myself, have a career that I am proud of, help people in their time of need, and help support my family. Having a scholarship pushes me and gives me the motivation to work even harder to excel in college.

I am beyond grateful for the donors who make these opportunities possible for me and other students. Their generosity has given me an opportunity in my life that I thought had passed me by, turning a dream into a reality. Having the financial burden of education lifted from my shoulders has given me the freedom to focus on what is important, my coursework.

I am forever grateful for the generous scholarship I received from the FNSNA. The Future Nurse Leader scholarship recognized the work I was doing at my school and in the surrounding community as president of our SNA. It always feels amazing when your hard work is noticed, and it was just the push I needed to get to the end! This scholarship not only allowed me to focus on my studies and extracurriculars, but also made me feel seen, empowered and supported. Thank you, FNSNA!

I landed my dream job in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU. I start in February of 2024, and I'm so excited to take care of these kiddos. The team at CHOR is amazing, and I know I will have the support I need to learn, grow and thrive here!
