Greetings!

It's been a long time since I sat behind this keyboard to type out a political email. Life has been busy with work, kids getting married, travel, work, grandkids, and more work.

I didn't want to leave everyone hanging before this upcoming primary. I've bumped into many of you in the real world, and many have asked for recommendations for voting.

Please understand these opinions are my own and not those of any organization or folks I'm affiliated with.

I hope you all are doing well- both blessed and being a blessing to others as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation's independence from the Brits this year.

For Freedom,

Dave

Governor

I've known Dan Cox personally for nearly 40 years. He's never wavered in his convictions. He's a hard worker, a family man, and the real deal. The grueling legislative work lobbying, and community education Dan did alongside his father Gary is one of the biggest reasons those of us who teach our children at home have the freedom to legally do so. This was not an easy freedom to win, and it won't continue to be safe if we don't elect people like Dan who are willing to roll up their sleeves and do the hard work of defending our freedom.

Ed Hale is a party-switching democrat who has already indicated openness to raising taxes and tolls instead of reining in out-of-control spending. He's not even good at pretending to be conservative in a Republican Primary, so why would he move to the right AFTER the election? Hale is not an option for me.

County Executive

Robert G. Cassilly has had a number of challenges to deal with from day one of his administration. Early on, the Harford County Volunteer EMS Association informed Cassilly that there would be no more staffing for ambulances in the county. Unfortunately, this was a problem that had not been dealt with properly for many years- politicians had "kicked the can down the road" for as long as they could. Cassilly had to find funding to purchase ambulances, hire personnel, and ensure all the pieces to this major public safety issue were coming together. It was a big challenge, but he got it done quickly. The county went from having just 3 paid ambulances to 17.

Public Safety isn't just about police and sheriff's office personnel- there was a real public safety crisis in Harford. Cassilly quietly did his job and found a solution behind the scenes while others were whining, grandstanding, on the sidelines, or even worse- putting up obstacles to fixing this serious issue only to make a political point.

I think Cassilly has tried to hold the line on spending. Despite the cries of "defunding the police", the Sheriff's Office budget has almost DOUBLED their budget since "Buford T." Gahler took office. The constant whining about defunding the police has been one of the biggest lies I've seen constantly repeated by Harford County politicians in the 23 years I've been observing and active in Harford County politics. There have been regular wage increases for the sheriff and his deputies. The sheriff is paid over $202,000 annually, a senior deputy earns nearly $112,000 annually. A 21 year-old starting patrol deputy straight out of the academy with zero experience earns nearly $70,000 plus a generous benefits package and take-home vehicle. You can look at the pay scale HERE. No one at the sheriff's office is being defunded.

What Cassilly DID do was put the brakes on a shiny new building that Gahler wanted. Multiple studies have shown the

proposed location wasn't the best, and recommended patrol district changes and staffing reallocations to improve efficiency instead. Rather than work together with Cassilly to address important public safety issues (like not having enough ambulances) and deal with budget realities, Gahler instead chose to act like a spoiled child, repeatedly insult Cassilly's character, and make it personal.

Having a policy disagreement on principle and trying to be fiscally responsible with other people's money does not warrant the personal attacks and character assassination that Cassilly has endured. Although there are certainly instances where I would disagree with Cassilly, I recognize he is a devoted family man, a decorated Iraq War veteran, and a person who has served his country and community for many years.

On a personal note, even in our disagreements, Cassilly is someone that can be reasoned with in a calm, rational, and thoughtful way rather than relying on half-truths and ad hominem attacks to make his point.

Because Cassilly has made some effort to hold the line on spending rather than pile on the taxpayers like Annapolis politicians continue to do, I think he deserves another term.

What's Wrong With Pat Vincenti?

Pat Vincenti is not a man of the truth. When I spoke to Pat Vincenti several years ago about conflicts during the councilmanic redistricting process, he "played dumb" as if he wasn't fully aware of the conflict.

What conflict am I referring to?

Erik Robey was appointed to the councilmanic redistricting commission following the mandated review after the 2020 census. Erik Robey is a shady individual employed by the Harford County Sheriff's Office with a current salary of $126,000. Sheriff Gahler invented this position out of thin air, specifically for Robey. You can read the stuff I wrote back in 2023 HERE for more info. He did not advertise for the position, there were no postings for this job. From the beginning, Buford T Gahler was going to build a formidable political machine headquartered at 45 South Main Street in Bel Air, and the ethically-challenged Robey was to be at the center of it.

Robey was actively working on then-candidate Aaron Penman's campaign for Council District B. He was listed on Penman's campaign website as his campaign advisor. Further, Robey runs a side-hustle called Insider Management (one could argue that it's his main hustle and the Sheriff's Office is his side hustle, but I digress....).

Insider Management receives money from multiple candidates to develop campaign strategy, mailers, signs, robo-calls, polls- basically a one-stop shop if you're running a campaign.

In other words, Robey was not an impartial member of the redistricting commission, he had a vested interest in the outcome. Not just for Penman's campaign, Robey had influence over drawing political boundaries to benefit other candidates that he was receiving money from. No stranger to conflicts of interest, Robey was again positioned in a way to misuse his position. You can read more about Robey's checkered past HERE.

In the 2022 campaign, Vincenti openly endorsed Penman very early in the race. Vincenti was frequently pictured at parades, rallies, fundraisers, and other public events with Penman. Vincenti had every right to endorse the candidate of his choice- but for Vincenti to claim he had no idea that Robey was working for Penman is simply not credible at all, given the obvious partnership of the two candidates. Vincenti lied straight to my face about this.

Vincenti The Grifter

Imagine this. Let's pretend I'm a pastor at my church, or an elder....a person in leadership. We'll call the church Liberty Baptist. I get elected to the county council. Shortly thereafter, the council passes a hotel tax. We pitch it as a savings to the taxpayer since we're hitting up all of the out-of-towners with the tax instead of our residents. The council divvies up the spoils of the tax, and I get roughly $85,000 directed to Liberty Baptist Church every year from the hotel tax. If this situation were true, people would rightly be outraged. It would be a tremendous conflict of interest. People would be calling for my resignation. There would be calls for the church to return the money.

Well, it is true. Except it wasn't me, and it wasn't Liberty Baptist Church. Switch the names to Patrick Vincenti and the Havre de Grace Decoy Museum, and you'll have an actual match. Vincenti has actively been on the board of the decoy museum for years funneling taxpayer money into the organization, and LOTS of it.

Vincenti the Tyrant

I know the "tyrant" label may sound extreme; but hang with me for a minute. Vincenti doesn't like it when people use their God-given freedom of speech guaranteed under the 1st amendment to say things he doesn't like. We documented this back in 2024, and you can view him silencing concerned citizens HERE. More recently, Vincenti couldn't keep his mouth shut for 3 minutes during the public comment section without interrupting another citizen whose speech he didn't like. You can watch the video HERE, and scroll down to the post from June 3rd at 9:20am courtesy of Restore Harford County. I'm sorry I can't do a direct link to the video because I'm not on Facebook anymore.

Vincenti the Big Spender

Pat Vincenti -AKA The Decoy Dictator- is controlled by unions, developers, and has voted to remove obstacles to even more out-of-control spending. The council previously could vote to reduce or remove spending items from the budget, but not increase the budget. Vincenti, along with other big spenders on the council- Penman, Bennett and Boyle-Tsottles- supported a charter amendment to eliminate this taxpayer protection in favor of more spending. You can read about it HERE. Thankfully, Cassilly protected the taxpayers with his VETO of the bill.

Obviously, given these serious concerns, I can't support Vincenti for ANY office, especially not County Executive. Good people don't habitually lie and distort the truth to win elections or get what they want. Good politicians don't try to silence concerned citizens and deprive them of their rights just because they have thin skin.

County Council President

There's been a lot of back-and-forth about whether Tony Giangiordano or Billy Boniface should be the council president. Thankfully, there is a viable alternative to both, and his name is Samuel Kahl.

To me, a vote for Boniface is a vote for the establishment- the good-ol-boy-network, a vote for more spending, a vote for more of the same failures, poor planning and letdowns from county government.

Tony G is marginally better, having earned more of his money from the private sector and having proposed some decent reforms during his time on the council. However, there have been many times where I was disappointed in Tony's apparent lack of conviction and backbone under pressure. A good county council president needs to be able to play well with others; but also have a firm set of convictions based in morality and an understanding of what our rights are- and the political courage to stand on those convictions in the face of adversity.

This is where Sam Kahl shines above the other candidates in this race. Sam has private sector experience in real estate, along with a decade of senior-level experience in state and local transportation agencies, including six years with the State Highway Administration and work for the Harford County Department of Public Works. He is currently employed by DPW, but unlike some other recent candidates for the council- Sam understands the county charter means what it says, and he would need to resign to serve as council president.

In my conversations with Sam Kahl, he is refreshingly open and honest about his beliefs, goals, and perspective.

Sam is a family man, a conservative, and someone who I believe will be beholden to The People- not special interest groups. I am excited he's stepped up to run for this office and I support him whole-heartedly. Check out his website here.

SHERIFF

If you've made it this far, you've probably seen this coming. I've been documenting for more than a few years now how Sheriff Jeff Gahler has lost his way. But reflecting on it, it goes further than just "losing his way". It goes beyond the deception, beyond the childish and immature rants, the misrepresentation and outright lies about being "defunded". If being "defunded" means increasing my salary to $203,000 annually and doubling my budget, someone please "defund" me too!

Moreover, it goes beyond bringing questionable people into to his inner circle accused of scandals at other counties and agencies. It goes beyond the poor judgment of plastering drinking events and challenges all over social media when you're the county's chief law enforcement officer. It goes beyond the insane hypocrisy of criticizing a decent man and sheriff like L. Jesse Bane who spent within his means as the head of the agency and was respectful of the taxpayers. Bane kept the budget flat for his 8 years in office, yet was criticized by Gahler as a "tax-and-spend" democrat. In Gahler's 12 years in office, his spending has gone from $69 million to almost $134 million.

That's not to say the budget should never increase, that deputies should never get raises, new cars, or new equipment. But when your budget nearly doubles when the population of your county has only increased by about 8.5%, you might have a spending and prioritization problem.

They say, "hindsight is always 20/20." I've lived long enough to accumulate some of that. Here's the hard part to think about when you consider yourself an informed person about politics and politicians- what if the person you once respected and thought was a good guy, really wasn't?

Would a good guy turn the county's premier law enforcement agency into a political playground, using deputies as pawns, props and political leverage against any who would oppose him in even the slightest way?

Would a good guy lie about the record of his predecessor who operated the agency with fiscal restraint, only to prove himself to be the very thing he accused of his opponent?

Would a good guy bring a man into the agency who had admitted, under oath, to misusing police resources in Anne Arundel County for political dossiers and vendettas against the political opponents of his boss, who was convicted of misconduct in office?

An honest appraisal of the situation requires me to answer "no". No, good guys do not do any of those things. Jeff Gahler hired Robey in 2014. In our April 30, 2023 newsletter, we said the following:

"In the Dagger article when Robey was hired, Gahler said of Robey, "He was placed in a position where he didn't feel he could say no" to County Executive Leopold's Illegal and unethical demands.

"But isn't that what separates those of us with integrity with those of us who don't? Is it too much to expect people who work at the Sheriff's office to do what's right, even if there are consequences? We all have tough choices to make in life, and the decisions we make are what define our character. Robey could have been a whistle blower. He could have refused to participate in wrongdoing, but he didn't. He rolled over on his boss Leopold only after ensuring he himself wouldn't be prosecuted by cutting an immunity deal."

Things may be bad, but I still believe it's not too much to expect our public officials to have integrity and be truthful. You can argue whether or not peace officers and public officials should be held to a higher standard- but this isn't even that. They should at least be held to the SAME standards as the rest of us.

Following his escapades in AA County, Robey should have never been let anywhere near the inner workings of a law enforcement agency, except from the inside of a jail cell. And I now question the integrity of anyone, including Buford T. Gahler, who would create a new, high-paying position out of thin air- especially for a man like Robey.

At some point with that 20/20 hindsight, we need to be honest with ourselves and ask hard questions to which we might not like the answers. One of those nagging questions is, "Why in the world would the sheriff ever bring someone like Erik Robey into the inner sanctum of the Harford County Sheriff's Office?"

The uncomfortable, but only reasonable explanation is that Gahler planned all along to do exactly what he has done- turn the taxpayer-funded agency into a political machine with himself at the head as the kingmaker.

All this leads me into the obvious- the Harford County Sheriff's Office is in desperate need of new leadership at the top.

Does Keith Runk check every box for me? No. I'd like to hear him talk less about SWAT teams and more about how fragile our liberty is, and what he'll do as sheriff to defend it when the proverbial doo-doo hits the fan.

But Runk checks enough of them that without hesitation, he's the better choice in 2026, and not just by a little. I believe Keith understands the good will that's been squandered by the hyper-politicization of the current administration and will work hard to earn back the trust of the public.

We need to get spending under control in this county, and that's going to be difficult with Gahler weaponizing law enforcement and public sector unions against anyone who tries to exercise a modicum of fiscal restraint during these difficult times where folks are struggling to keep up with the cost of living, due in large part to our politicians' insatiable spending appetites (including Gahler) and the subsequent devaluation of every dollar we produce.

For the long-term good of Harford County, Gahler's political machine needs to be dismantled sooner than later, and that's going to be difficult if he's re-elected.

Runk has the training and resume to do the job. As I was writing this, I came across Delegate Lauren Arikan's endorsement of Keith Runk. It sounded better than what I was going to write, so I'm going to share hers:

"Our Deputies don’t deserve to be hyper-politicized and constantly used as political pawns. These are real people, with families who live in the county. Many of whom, privately, have reached out over the years to express great concern about how the Sheriff’s office has become distracted from policy and focused on politics.

"Enter: Keith Runk. I had the opportunity to meet with him and his delightful wife when they first announced. He is a man of great integrity according to the mutual friends we have and apparently according to Jeff Gahler— before Runk filed to run. I have complete faith that Keith is the conservative choice for Sheriff and will not spend a single minute hatching unserious plans to attack the best County Executive Harford County has ever had."

For what it's worth, Runk also enjoys the endorsement of Former Governor Bob Ehrlich.
