Mayor's Message
“I have only made this letter longer because I have not had the time to make it shorter.”
- Blaise Pascal
I have given considerable thought lately to the concept of brevity and my ability to communicate more precisely, not only in my written messages but in each of the communication tools I utilize. While many have responded in a positive manner to my messages, I have individuals (my wife, for instance) who, while complimenting my writing, have made comments regarding the length of several of my more recent writings. As a former Creative Writing instructor, I always emphasized to my students the need to get their message across as concisely as possible; why use 300 words to say something when 150 will communicate the same message?
Beginning with this message, I plan to examine how I can better communicate a warm and inviting message to you, my readers, in half as many words as I now employ. As George Burns is quoted as saying, “The secret of a good sermon is to have a good beginning and a good ending and to have the two as close together as possible.” In future Mayor’s Messages, I will work diligently in presenting a “good sermon” that, while more concise, provides you with the same quality of writing that many of you have enjoyed. Who knows, maybe some of my detractors, like my wife, will find themselves reading my entire message.

New Event Sign
Darien is pleased to showcase the new city event sign located at the SW corner of Cass and Plainfield. After a vehicle struck the sign, it needed to be replaced. At that time, the city approached the property owner and partnered to construct the community event sign combined with the tenant sign. The sign will display community and business information. Mayor Marchese cited this achievement as another example of the creative ways the City works with the business community

DuPage County Health Department - National Infant Immunization Week
The DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is joining public health agencies and medical partners to observe National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) from April 22-29.
NIIW highlights the importance of protecting infants and young children two years and younger from vaccine-preventable diseases such as whooping cough (pertussis), chickenpox, measles, mumps, and rubella, all of which pose significant threats to the health of our children and the well-being of our community. Throughout this week, DCHD urges families to schedule their children’s well-child visits and follow the childhood routinely recommended vaccination schedule.
Childhood immunizations are available at DCHD through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) Program for children without insurance, with insurance that doesn't include immunizations, or those eligible for Medicaid. The VFC Program helps eligible children receive vaccines at no cost and follows the recommended immunization schedule. Serving as one of the nation’s most important contributors to health equity, the VFC Program helps ensure that all children have a better chance of getting their recommended vaccinations on schedule and staying healthy.
Additional VFC providers can be found through the VFC Provider Search. For more information about the VFC Program, please contact DCHD at (630) 682-7400.
