SUPPORT DUKE'S HOSPICE

Duke has been with us for two months!

Duke’s story shines light on one of the many amazing Foster Families with RMGDRI. It has been a full family effort to provide round the clock care to Duke. When he first arrived, he could not get up on his own. It took two people to get him to his feet. He was unable to move much other to adjust so he could rest his head on his Foster Family’s laps. They would carry Duke in and out of the house at all hours for Duke to relieve himself.

Anne, Adam and the kids believed in Duke. They saw a resilience in this boy that made all the hard work and long nights worthwhile. And Duke exuded so much gentleness and love in return, you could not help but fall in love with this sweet soul.

Duke’s recovery has been nothing short of impressive. With a combination of carefully selected medications, diet, and a whole lot of TLC from his Foster Family, Duke does not look or act like the same dog that first arrived.

Duke is literally galloping around the yard!! Yes, galloping with a happy prance. He has enough energy and desire to chase after rascally rabbits, too. And no stuffed animal is safe from Duke’s ferocious “stuffy” shakes. The family’s ever gracious Great Dane Captain is ready to engage in play play play. Duke is still a little cautious on that one at his gentle age of 8 but stay tuned. The charm of Great Dane Captain is hard to resist.

Duke is going up and down stairs, running in the backyard and wading in the creek. He has a big appetite and eats 8+ cups of food a day. He loves his Greek yogurt, Kongs, sticks and lick pads. He is always up for a cuddle. He has met many dog and human friends and is beloved by all. Duke goes on all of our family walks and proudly trots beside his best buddy, Captain.”

We continue to reassess Duke’s diet, medications, and are looking into avenues to extend quality of life for Duke with his vet. This Foster Family counts every day that Duke experiences love and joy a victory. We do, too! If there is such a thing as “meant to be” – Duke was meant to find his family – Anne, Adam, Jack, Lucy, Luke & Captain.

Kindly consider supporting Duke’s hospice care with a donation. We are a 100% volunteer-based, non-profit rescue. All support is greatly appreciated by Duke, his foster family and by all of us at RMGDRI!

DON'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT MONTH PREPARE FOR JULY 4th TODAY!

Do fireworks make your pet nervous? Now is the time to prepare. As we approach Independence Day, pet anxiety remedies are going to be in high demand. For the sake of your furry friends, don't wait too long, lest you miss out.

BOOK YOUR VET APPOINTMENT

If you need to request or renew any prescriptions, schedule your appointment between a month ago and within two weeks. This not only applies for anxiety medications that may be in short supply but also your pets' other medications. As pet parents scramble to prepare for the loudest holiday (besides two hours into any Thanksgiving dinner I've ever attended), they'll probably try to make the most of the trip and refill and schedule whatever meds and services they can. So, expect a general increase in demand at your veterinarian.

"Book your vet appointment" has a double meaning in this case. With Memorial Day fresh on our minds, check in on your military, first responder, and other noise-sensitive friends. Ironically, our chosen display of patriotism is difficult for a lot of our guests of honor and a little thoughtful compassion goes a long way.

PURCHASE A THUNDERSHIRT NOW

Only if you need one, of course. As indicated by the Google Trends graphs below, there are a LOT of people, especially in Colorado, who are going to be placing their order soon.

PREPARE

Is your pet microchipped? If not, you may want to do that when you schedule your vet appointment.

Is your pet's ID up to date? If you've moved recently or changed your phone number, your pet's ID tags might have inaccurate information.

What's you pet plan for the week of the 4th?

  • Make sure your pet is comfortable in the quieter parts of your home, so they don't experience additional stress because you've locked them somewhere weird.
  • Provide a positive distraction. Youtube has several 10-hour or longer "Dog TV" videos with calming music that can help distract and drown out the frightening explosions.
  • Are you staying home or going out? A sleeping dog is easier to keep calm than a rambunctious pup. Visit the park, go for a walk, or throw the ball around before you start plumping up the franks and announcing that it's Miller Time.
  • Know the location of your local humane society.

IT'S A CELEBRATION, MAKE IT FUN

Include your pawed pals in the, and I cannot stress this enough, APPROPRIATE festivities. Provide plenty of positive associations with the day. Maybe that's a bite of hotdog, some frozen baby food, or their favorite bone. If you're having people over, give them small training treats to share with your buddy; that way if Fido gets frightened, they may run to you or one of your fun new guests for comfort instead of just running.

Alcohol, onions, garlic, and grapes are all very bad for dogs. Take a quick minute to check and make sure whatever you may be sharing with your pet is safe for them.

TAILS OF SUCCESS

MAIZY

It took me a hot minute, but I’ve found my Forever Home and I’m never leaving.  My family adopted my amazing Dane brother last year and when they heard I was tired of moving around to different homes, they quickly took me in and now I’m in the bestest menagerie on the planet!

ZEUS

Just look at me now!  I bet you can tell which is me and which is my new Forever Brother, Lurch!  I found this amazing family who look after me for the rest of my life and give me all the love and comforts that I missed out on earlier. They have renamed me Winston, because I remind them of a broad-shouldered little guy looking worried about the world – so yes, that is me with the serious face.

ROMEO

For never was there a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo. WAIT. We changed the ending! This Romeo has found his Happy Place where I am the only star in the play and I live happily ever after with my forever family.

APOLLO

I have the most amazing story to tell. My owner had to go into a nursing home and so I was taken to a shelter. RMGDRI found me there and I got to stay with an experienced Foster until my Forever Family was found. So get this, I live with a 3 year old Dane and he has become my very best buddy – he even cleans any leftover pupcup out of my mouth for me – oral hygiene is the thing! And you will not believe all the cush dog beds around my new home for an older fella like me..
