10 SCIENCE-BASED BENEFITS OF HAVING A DOG

By: Kaitlyn Arford | AKC.org

Unconditional love. Devoted companionship. Constant entertainment. Most of us dog lovers know that life is better with a dog. But is that knowledge based on a feeling, or is there something else at work? There is — science.

Spending time with dogs does wonders for your well-being. Recent research shows that owning a dog is good for you physically and emotionally. Dogs make us happier and healthier. They can help us cope with a crisis and can even help you get a date. Read on for 10 science-backed benefits of having a dog.

1. Dogs Make Us Feel Less Alone

Dogs can be there for you even when people can’t. They offer unconditional love, emotional support, and constant cuddles that help stave off social isolation. A small Australian study discovered that dog ownership can reduce loneliness.

A national survey of pet owners and non-pet owners by the Human Animal Bond Research Institute found that 85% of respondents believe that interaction with pets reduces loneliness. Most agree that human-pet interactions can help address social isolation.

2. Dogs Are Good for Your Heart

Owning a dog can help you live longer. A comprehensive review of studies published between 1950 and 2019 found that dog owners had a lower risk of death. Studies suggest that dog owners have lower blood pressure levels and improved responses to stress. Research has concluded that the bond between humans and dogs reduces stress, which is a major cause of cardiovascular problems.

3. Dogs Help You Stop Stressing Out

Your canine companion can offer comfort and ease your worries. Multiple studies show that dogs and therapy dogs help relieve stress and anxiety.

Even just petting a familiar dog lowers blood pressure and heart rate, slows breathing, and relaxes tense muscles. Scientists at Washington State University discovered that petting a dog for just 10 minutes can have a significant impact. Study participants had a significant reduction in cortisol, a major stress hormone.

4. Dogs Can Help Us Cope in Times of Crisis

Dogs can help us recover psychologically from a crisis. Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine discovered that military veterans with PTSD can do better both physiologically and psychologically when they have a service dog. Veterans with a service dog had significantly fewer symptoms of PTSD and showed improved coping skills.

5. Dogs Encourage You to Move

Those long treks along sidewalks, trails, and paths add up. A 2019 British study discovered that dog owners are nearly four times more likely than non-dog owners to meet daily physical activity guidelines.

Dog owners spend nearly 300 minutes every week walking with their dogs. That’s 200 more minutes of walking than people without a dog of their own.

MIMI'S LITTER REUNION

We had Mimi's Great Dane Litter Reunion for the 2nd time and it was again unbelievable! It included 3 identical Danes from the litter... Sammy, Huckleberry (formerly Calliope) and my Phoebe. As I've told people before, not only are the Danes from Mimi's litter absolutely identical twins, they move and play the same way, have identical barks and sounds and are just identical. It would be difficult to know who's who without their collars.

There were also two other Danes there... Ella (Phoebe's much older sister and Pickles (formerly Max) who was a little older but almost seemed identical except was easy to differentiate by his white chest.

Once again, all I can say is we all had a blast...but probably didn't compare with the blast the pups had!

Thanks to all who came and gave 5 great Danes a great time and gave 3 of the Danes a chance to meet their litter mate siblings now grown up but still puppies at heart!

TAILS OF SUCCESS

APOLLO

I have the most amazing story to tell. My owner had to go into a nursing home and so I was taken to a shelter. RMGDI found me there and I got to stay with an experienced Foster until my Forever Family was found. So get this, I live with a three

year old Dane and he has become my very best buddy – he even cleans any leftover pupcup out of my mouth for me – oral hygiene is the thing! And you will not believe all the cush dog beds around my new home for an older fella like me.

THOR

Ahhh yes, I am in the mountains and loving life with my forever family. I have a really cool Husky/Akita sister to hand with and a couple cats – but my Forever Mom is really the Cat’s Meow!

ADA

I have the most exciting news! My Foster Family decided I can stay forever because I wiggled and giggled my way into their hearts. And get this – whenever someone new comes to the family, I will Always be the Big Sister.

COFFEE BEAN

I am living with the most amazing family! Since the day I came to their house, they have been working with me and taking me to special and fun training classes so I can be the Greatest Dane I can be. I’m SO happy!

MILLIE

Silly Millie here – I’ve found my forever home and could not be happier. My new family learned about me and I came over for a visit and decided to stay! I get to live with 2 cats and 2 ferrets!!!

***DUKE***

Duke crossed the rainbow bridge on 6/21/24.

With the love of his foster family and all the vets that fell in love with him, Duke was able to live 2 months longer than anyone expected. He rallied for the 3 months he was in their care, but the past few days, he was again having a hard time getting up and walking and the medications were no longer keeping up with his pain levels. With nothing more we could do to keep him comfortable, it was time to say goodbye to this sweet boy.

Thank you so much to his foster family Anne, Adam, Jack, Lucy, Luke & Great Dane Captain who took him in knowing very well that he would only be with them for a short time. With their care and massive amounts of love, he spent his final days in a loving family that every Dane dreams of. Rest in peace sweet boy, you will never be forgotten.

Thank you to everyone who donated to his care, and to Lap of Love and Dr. Mary who were able to make his transition peaceful and in the place he loved so much.
