Get Fido in on New Year Resolutions!
|
|
Every year we resolve to do better. Whether that is eating healthier, volunteering more, or learning something new. We often fail at meeting our resolutions because we keep them vague and idealistic.
In this month's article, we're going to look at how setting SMART goals for dog training can help our old dogs learn new tricks. Maybe once our four-legged accountabilibuddies show us how it's done, we'll even apply these strategies to our own resolutions.
|
|
Specific
Fido and I will master 12 commands this year: Heel, Stay, Sit, Lay, Back Up, Leave It, Shake, Wave, Bow, Beg, Rollover, Play Dead.
One of the biggest mistakes we make when setting goals is remaining vague when we establish them. Ambiguity makes us see our goals as dreams, not as tasks to complete, so we're okay not doing them. When setting specific goals like the example above, you know exactly what you're shooting for. "I'll teach Fido some new commands," leaves you open to bailing on the plan come February 1st.
|
|
Measurable
Mastering a command means performing the command immediately when asked.
If you can't track your progress, how do you know if you're progressing? Objectivity is the name of the game. Eventually getting Fido to rollover after giving the command for the 4th time is better than not knowing it at all but it's not exactly mastery.
Keep a notepad of how many times you have to demonstrate a command before they perform it, then how many times you have to give the command before they identify and perform it. As those numbers decrease day after day, you'll see the progress. Once Fido is consistently performing the command when asked, you'll know you've made it.
|
|
Achievable
Fido and I will practice commands for at least 30 minutes per day, we will introduce a new command each month.
Breaking down a large goal into bite-size pieces is a good way to stay on track. You don't want to throw everything at them at once and get frustrated with the process. Think of each command like a rung on a ladder, you need to be stable on one before proceeding to the next.
|
|
Relevant
I want Fido to be well-behaved so they can join me in public without being a disturbance to others.
Goal-setting only works if you care about the results. If you don't have the intention of bringing Fido on a hike, to the farmer's market, or out to a brewery with some friends, and are more interested in a cuddle-buddy you can binge-watch "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" with (FYI don't forget to renew your Amazon Smile), then you might not care how well Fido can heel or rollover. If this example doesn't speak to you, maybe there is another goal more relevant to you and your pup that you can apply these SMART goals to.
|
|
Time-bound
Fido will master 12 command this YEAR.
The final piece of a SMART goal is that you have to have a finish line. If your goal is to do something someday, then you have all the time in the world before you need to start. Deadlines lead to expediency, which is critical to success.

DIEGO (now Dex) has a home with his amazing foster family! Diego, also known as Dex, has had an incredibly tough journey since being born in Rescue a little over 2 years ago.
Dex is one of the Destination Puppies, and has been loved by his second foster family since early 2020. Dex has a condition that causes him to have seizures. He may also have wobblers, and a few other medical issues which result in him having to take lots of medication daily to live a somewhat normal life. His family has made many sacrifices to make sure that Dex is never alone, and that when he does have a seizure, someone is with him to comfort him and keep him safe. Dex lives with his Great Dane sister Rue (not from the same litter), Chief, an 8 year old German Shepherd and two cats, Minion and Po. He has 4 human siblings as well, and loves to snuggle on the couch in his homemade pajamas. We are so happy for Dex and his family, and wish him health and happiness.

Can you believe it, People? I have a new home in CO with 3 kids who love dogs sleeping with them. There are already 2 small dogs there, so I will be the lucky one to fill that 3rd bed! And best of all, those small dogs won’t know until it’s too late that I’m going to grow up to be a lot bigger than them. But I will love them and protect them like a perfect Dane Sister!
Wheeeee – here I come, Furever Family!

With my new family in Utah, I’ll be living with another dog, Gertie, who is an Anatolian Shepherd, so I’ll have a playmate to pal around with! I’ll also have two non fur siblings, who I’m looking forward to getting lots of snuggles from! My new home is in the mountains, and I’ll be a hiking dog someday! Can’t wait! Oh, and my new family has named me Gary, after my foster brother in my foster home! He was a pretty cool dude, just like me! So happy to be with my new family!

Samson
Samson has a home with his new family in CO!
I’ve had a long journey to find my forever family! I’ve had some pretty great foster families along the way, and am so grateful for them too! My foster Mom and Dad realized how boring life would be without me, so they have decided to make me part of their family. I’m the only dog, so I’ll have lots of love and attention! My Mom lets me sleep on my own queen sized bed while she works, so life here is really great! Thanks to everyone who helped me find my way to my family! They really love me a lot, and I’m so happy!

Zhara
I have a home with with my foster Mom in MO!
I am what is known as a a “Tri-Pawed” pup! I had to have one of my back legs amputated after an accident, but you would never know it because I run and play just like a Four Pawed pup! My Mom, Jeanne, had a Dane just like me with only three legs too! She really knows how to care for me, and all the secrets to make my life comfortable! I’m excited to travel with my Mom, and to just spend quality time snuggling with her! I’m grateful to her for fostering me, and giving me a loving home where I feel like a part of the family!
