Teach Your Dog to Potty on Command
Sounds too good to be true, right?
According to akc.org, there is a way to train your dog to do just that.
As many of you might already know, Great Danes are excellent apartment dogs. Not everyone has the luxury of a backyard to just let their dog in and out to do their business. Think of how much easier bathroom breaks would be if you could teach your dog to go on cue.
Check out these 6 steps to help you get there.
STEP 1: Anticipate when your dog is going to need to potty, such as after play or naps.
Be prepared with treats when you take your dog out.
STEP 2: While your dog is looking for the right place to pee or poop, don't say anything.
It's important not to interrupt them during this process or say the cue too early.
STEP 3: When your dog starts to go, get ready to cue, praise, and treat.
Make sure to pick a different cue for pee and poop. It can be simply "pee" and "poop" or you can do something different like "business" or "showtime".
STEP 4: As your dog is finishing up, start to praise/click and introduce your verbal cue of choice.
It's important to only use your cue when your dog is actively peeing or pooping, but it's a good idea to wait until they are nearly done to prevent them from stopping early when they hear the click/praise.
STEP 5: As your dog starts to make the association between the verbal cue and going potty, you can start to use it right as your dog starts to go.
EX: As your dog stops circling and squats to potty, say "showtime" or whatever cue you have selected. When they finish, praise again with something like "yes showtime" or pair with your click (if you are clicker training) and a treat.
STEP 6: After several days or weeks of building understanding with your new cue paired with knowing when your dog is about to start or is actively going potty, it's time to use the new cue.
Get your dog to a quiet spot and get them to go potty. When they pee/poop, give them lots of praise and rewards.

Yay, Me!!! I’m going home with my new Mom in Missouri! She is very active and will take me for lots of walks and just everywhere she goes – even traveling. I am so happy I will be living with my new Mom who has lots of Dane experience and she will help me grow up to be a wonderful companion to her and a great friend to all the new people and dogs I will get to meet.
Thank you Foster Family for taking care of me and my brothers and sisters while the Rescue found my new Mom!!

Yessss! I’m going home with my new Dad in Colorado and can’t wait to spend all my time with him. He is semi-retired and will take me lots of places and on long walks every day. His daughter has a Great Dane, too. Does that make me an Aunt already? I will get to stay with them on the rare occasion I can’t go with Dad on his travels. Wow, already my new family just got bigger!

Guess What??? My awesome Foster Family decided to adopt me and I’m over the moon! My new Dad works from home and I will get to be his coworker. That means lots of love and walks and love and snuggles and love and…
Thank you Foster Family for falling in love with me and giving me a furever home!

Oh, Yeah! I did it! I snuggled and charmed and amused my way into my Foster Family’s heart and I’m sticking with them! Foster Dad works from home and he also is one of the Rescue Volunteers, so I have been able to listen in on his phone calls and video chats while he helps other dogs find homes. I am super excited to be right where I am!

Well, won’t you just look at me! I’m going home with my new family in Utah! I am so happy I will be with them and they will take me on walks and I get to meet new dogs and people, yippee!!! My new family has fostered for, and adopted from RMGDRI before, and they have lots of Dane experience. And I hear they have a super awesome pet sitter for when I can’t go with them!

I get to take multiple walks each day with Mom and Brother and I get to ride in the backseat with him too. Thank you for Fostering me, Mom!
