Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving
To all of our U.S. readers, we wish you a very
Happy Thanksgiving. May your holiday be filled with good times, good food and good memories shared with family and friends.  To our international readers, we invite you to pause and join us in giving thanks for the many blessings we enjoy.
More countries acting to combat antimicrobial resistance
Efforts to confront the spread of antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens on farms and in food systems are gathering momentum, thanks to strong backing by governments and technical support that is boosting national capacities to respond to the problem, the U.N. Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Nov. 17.

Antimicrobial medicines are widely used in livestock, poultry and aquaculture operations to treat or prevent diseases, FAO said. The overuse and misuse of antimicrobial medicines for human and animal health, including routine use of growth promoters, drives the emergence and spread of disease-causing pathogens that are resistant to antibiotics and increasingly difficult to treat.

Chobani announces major expansion
Chobani LLC, a leading manufacturer of Greek yogurt, has announced a major expansion to its manufacturing facility in Twin Falls, Ida., which will be used to drive continued growth in the region, the state and the community and expand production capability to meet demand for new and existing products.

As the yogurt category and overall consumption continue to grow, Chobani is self-funding major expansion initiatives, including:
* The purchase and conversion of three production lines for Chobani "Flip" products -- its fastest-growing yogurt platform;
* The purchase of a new production line and a new bulk production line for foodservice opportunities to drive further growth in schools, hotels, airlines and restaurants;
* The purchase of new equipment for new adjacent categories like Chobani Meze Dips and yogurt drinks, and
* The launch of products to new international markets, including Mexico and Puerto Rico in the second quarter of 2016, furthering its mission to make better food for more people.

Dairy alternative beverage consumption to continue upward trend
Per capita consumption of fluid milk beverages decreased by close to 22% from 2000 to 2016, yet during the same period, consumption of non-dairy plant-based milk alternatives increased by triple digits. According to a new report from market research firm Packaged Facts, "Dairy & Dairy Alternative Beverage Trends in the U.S., 4th Edition," the market for dairy and dairy alternative beverages will reach a projected $28 billion by 2021.

Spurring the segment's growth will be plant-based dairy alternatives, which Packaged Facts said are expected to expand to represent 40% of the combined total of dairy and dairy alternative beverages, up from 25% in 2016, when dairy alternative beverages accounted for barely $6 billion in retail sales.

ADSA News and Happenings
J ournal of Dairy Science celebrates 100 years of progress
The
Journal of Dairy Science ® reflects on the past century of scientific advances as it begins a second century of publication.
The first issue of the Journal of Dairy Science® was published in 1917. Since that first issue, the journal has published almost 30,000 articles and 200,000 pages. In the process, the work published in the journal has made a broad and invaluable contribution to our scientific knowledge and to the production of a safe and affordable food supply.
The authors published in the first issue would recognize many current topics of research, but their work also laid the foundation for new fields of research they could not have foreseen. Topics unknown even 50 years ago are now standard areas for research and application. "As in all scientific fields, dairy science demonstrates the continuous loop between the initial question, the testing of the hypothesis (research), the defense and publication of the results, and the creation of new questions based on the original research. This constant cycle of scientific discovery fueled by the inborn curiosity of the human condition has led to a century of dairy science research and vast improvement in the production and processing of milk," said Matt Lucy, JDS editor-in-chief.
To reflect on that century of research, the December issue of the journal's 100th volume contains the ADSA Foundation Collection of 100-Year Reviews, a special 100th anniversary retrospective containing 30 focused reviews of progress in areas of research that are featured in JDS. The timelines in each review place major discoveries and events into historical context. "Students and researchers of the present need a solid foundation of what we know now so that we do not repeat the past instead of creating the future. We hope that the articles themselves and the timelines become valuable resources for this purpose," said John McNamara, guest editor for the special issue. A stand-alone reprint of the ADSA Foundation Collection of 100-Year Reviews is available from Elsevier for $35.00 plus the cost of shipping at https://elsstmj.directfrompublisher.com .
Although the special issue's review of past progress shows that we cannot always predict the future dividends of current research, it seems clear that the future will hold further integration of disparate fields of research, new methods of investigation, and new areas of research, and the Journal of Dairy Science will continue to be part of that scientific endeavor. As the journal enters a new century of publication, it celebrates its past and looks toward a future shaped by the scientists who will continue its scientific legacy.
