ADSA joins AAC Coalition letter to Senate
As the Senate works on their version of the 2018 Farm Bill, ADSA joined 115 other organizations in an Animal Agriculture Coalition (AAC) letter to the staffs of all 100 Senators. The letter outlined components that needed to be included in the Farm Bill to adequately address risks to animal health, livestock export markets, and our nation's livestock and poultry producers. A copy of the letter may be found in the
ADSA Policy section
of the website.

Rapid diagnostic test for mastitis under development
Abingdon Health, a tenant at the University of Birmingham's bio-incubator in the U.K., is developing a rapid diagnostic test for bovine mastitis, a common and serious health problem in dairy cows that has a large financial impact on the global dairy industry.
Mastitis is usually caused by a bacterial infection in the cow's teats or udders and reduces the quality of milk, rendering it unsaleable. Mastitis can be fatal to the cow and is a problem for dairy farmers around the globe - for example, in India, which has 43.6 million dairy cows, making up 16.5% of the global dairy cow population.

Survey shows U.S. consumers confident food is safe
About three-quarters of Americans plan to don an apron and grab a spatula to grill their favorite steaks, burgers or chicken this year, but can consumers trust that their food is safe as grilling season kicks into high gear? Ninety-four percent of American say yes, and that's good news as Americans enter the heavy grilling months of summer.
Cargill's latest "Feed4Thought" survey, which polled more than 1,000 people in the U.S. in April 2018, found that 94% say they trust that the meat they buy for grilling is safe to eat. The survey also found that nearly 80% believe food producers are taking the necessary steps to ensure that meat is safe for grilling. Additionally, 87% believe an animal's diet can have an impact on food safety.

Yogurt may dampen chronic inflammation
As part of the innate immune system, inflammation can be good as part of the body's first line of defense against illness and injury. However, if the inflammatory response goes on for too long, it can lead to a condition called chronic inflammation, where the body essentially attacks itself, wreaking biological havoc on its organs and systems, according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Chronic inflammation is a factor in inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis and asthma. It is also associated with obesity, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases.

News and Updates for the 2018 Annual Meeting
We have scheduled many opportunities at the ADSA Annual Meeting to step out of traditional sessions to network with colleagues while still taking in all of the best science the dairy world has to offer.
The evening social events at ADSA 2018 include two informal sessions on Tuesday-make plans to attend either the Informal Calf Session or the Informal Milk Quality Session from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Holiday Inn Knoxville. Both sessions include a cash bar, some finger foods, and great science. The informal sessions are intended to provide a forum for open discussion among those interested in calf and heifer rearing and milk quality, respectively. They present a unique opportunity for researchers and field professionals to exchange ideas and challenge each other on new areas of opportunity for research and progress.
Other opportunities for professional and social interaction include the revamped opening reception on Sunday evening, the ice cream social following the ADSA awards ceremony on Monday, and industry-sponsored events. And once the day is over at the convention center, why not gather a group of old and new friends for dinner-Knoxville has many
award-winning restaurants to suit all budgets and tastes.
