Idle, uncleaned milk trucks don't compromise raw milk quality
Raw milk quality isn't compromised when tanker trucks sit empty and uncleaned for hours between loads, according to new research at Oregon State University.
The findings from a new study published in the Journal of Dairy Science could provide guidance for the U.S. Food & Drug Administration as it reviews its Grade "A" Pasteurized Milk Ordinance, said Lisbeth Goddik, professor and Oregon State Extension Service specialist in dairy processing in the College of Agricultural Sciences.
The ordinance - a set of minimum standards and requirements established by FDA for regulating the production, processing and packaging of Grade A milk - allows milk tanker trucks to be used repeatedly for 24 hours before mandatory cleaning, but specifications aren't made for the length of time a tanker can be empty between loads.

Forage-based dairy rations produce nutritionally enhanced milk Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are essential nutrients for people, yet consuming too much omega-6 and too little omega-3 can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. Today, Americans consume about 10-15 g of omega-6 for every gram of omega-3.
Previous studies have shown that consuming organic beef or organic dairy products lowers dietary intakes of omega-6 while increasing intakes of omega-3 and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is another valuable, heart-healthy fatty acid.
In a collaborative research project involving the University of Minnesota, Johns Hopkins University, Newcastle University in England, Southern Cross University in Australia and the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark, researchers have found that cows fed a 100% organic grass and legume-based diet produce milk with elevated levels of omega-3 and CLA and, thus, provide a markedly healthier balance of fatty acids.

Trump's steel tariff decision called troubling
President Donald Trump announced Thursday he would be imposing sweeping tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum. Agricultural groups previously had warned against the move as it puts a target on U.S. agricultural products in any retaliatory wars.
Early Thursday morning, reports began surfacing that Trump would indeed slap the highest called-for tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. In what some reported as "trade chaos," the Administration only met with steel and aluminum representatives on Thursday and did not actually make any formal announcements.

Absorption and utilization of macro- and microminerals detailed in a new review from
Journal of Dairy Science®
Life is dependent on minerals. Accordingly, the diets of animals must contain certain minerals in both large amounts, via marcrominerals, and small amounts, via microminerals. In a thorough and wide-ranging review, Jesse Goff, DVM, PhD, professor and Anderson Chair in Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, examined necessary minerals as well as the mechanisms for their absorption in cows, providing insight into these vital elements.
"By understanding the mechanisms involved in movement of minerals from the diet into the blood of the animal, I hope the reader might gain some insight into factors that impair or enhance mineral utilization by animals," Dr. Goff said. "With that knowledge, a nutritionist may have a better idea of when the diet needs more or less minerals, and whether the form of the mineral used in the diet needs to be altered to better meet the needs of the cow."
In the review, Goff summarizes each of the seven macrominerals, calcium, phosphorus, sodium and chloride, potassium, magnesium, and sulfur, as well as several important microminerals, including cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, zinc, and chromium, that together contribute to a complete dietary nutrient profile for the cow. Two mechanisms of mineral absorption, paracellular absorption and transcellular absorption, are also discussed in great detail. Importantly, Dr. Goff also reviews factors such as the complex interactions that can interfere with mineral uptake and compromise the effectiveness of a diet in promoting health and productivity of cows.
Others in the field have already hailed Dr. Goff's work as a foundational piece of scholarship. For instance, David Beede, PhD, professor emeritus in the Department of Animal Science at Michigan State University, described the review as a unique piece of research with no equivalent as up to date.
"This invited review is a go-to reference for mineral nutrition and dietary factors affecting fundamental physiology and mineral status of the animals serving mankind. The nine pictorial models illustrating gut transport mechanisms of different mineral ions are especially helpful to the fundamental understanding of mineral nutrition," Dr. Beede said.
