'The Fact and Fiction of Developing Practical
Animal Care Programs' webinar planned
Consumers today are very different than they used to be, yet have a strong interest in where their food comes from, including how food animals are raised and handled. To help build consumer trust in dairy products, the Dairy Cattle Welfare Council (DCWC) is pleased to offer the webinar series for 2018. These educational sessions will be available to attendees from across the United States as well as around the world.
The webinars feature top-rated topics from previous DCWC Annual Meetings as well as other pertinent topics. They offer an opportunity to learn about food integrity and communicating with the consumer as well as animal-human interaction at the farm level. Webinars are free of charge, but you must register.

Study highlights Pennsylvania's dairy processing plant potential
A new study shows promise for Pennsylvania and dairy processors looking to relocate or expand their operations. In short, it revealed that two new plants in Pennsylvania for processing "other" cheeses - non-American types, including Italian and specialty cheeses - could significantly reduce overall supply chain costs, enhance the marginal value of milk for producers and create more than 1,000 jobs while also adding $1.5 billion in economic activity to the state.
NVSL reorganizes certain labs in Ames
On Dec. 10, 2017, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), which is part of the Veterinary Services (VS) Science, Technology & Analysis Services business unit within the Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service, underwent a reorganization of three of the current laboratory units in Ames, Iowa: the Diagnostic Bacteriology Laboratory, the Pathobiology Laboratory and the Diagnostic Virology Laboratory.

According to a Dec. 29 update, in 2015, NVSL began to look at how it was organized and where efficiencies could be gained to meet future internal needs and the needs of NVSL's stakeholders. The structure of every NVSL-Ames unit was reviewed, specifically looking for opportunities to place similar functions in the same laboratories while also creating a more even distribution of work and personnel across the laboratory units. VS said the reorganization places existing laboratory sections into two new laboratories: the Diagnostic Bacteriology & Pathology Laboratory and the Diagnostic Bioanalytical & Reagent Laboratory (DBRL). The Diagnostic Virology Laboratory retains three testing sections, with a reagents unit moving to DBRL.

EPA denies Clean Air Act petition for CAFOs
Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt gave farmers and ranchers welcome news just before the new year, denying a petition from environmental activists that asked the agency to craft new requirements for animal agriculture under the Clean Air Act (CAA).

The petition was from The Humane Society of the United States and environmental groups seeking to promulgate standards of performance for new concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) under the CAA and to prescribe regulations for state performance standards for existing CAFOs.

In denying the petition, EPA said it "recognizes that emissions from this sector exist and has been undertaking multiple activities related to CAFO emissions as part of the agency's preferred approach to address these emissions."
