FASS participates in USDA tactical sciences meeting
The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) and the University of Maryland sponsored a meeting on February 15-16 entitled "Tactical Sciences for the Protection of the U.S. Agricultural Enterprise: NIFA's Call to Conversation".  FASS Washington Representative Lowell Randel participated in the meeting along with approximately 70 representatives from government, universities and industry.  The purpose of the meeting was to discuss strategies related to advancing the tactical sciences.
Participants considered issues including:
  • What economic, political, social, technological, and scientific trends/forces will impact security of the American food system enterprise in the next 10 years?
  • What efforts are currently working related to the Tactical Sciences, and where are opportunities for improvement?
  • What should a successful approach and strategy for the Tactical Sciences look like moving forward?
There was a strong consensus among the participants that increased coordination and support for the Tactical Sciences is important for securing the nation's food production system.  The group also identified the need to develop a shared vision and message related to Tactical Sciences to communicate the importance to external and internal audiences.  More information about the event can be found here .
Midwest Dairy Challenge draws most students in 12 years
MADISON, Wisc., February 8-10, 2017- Coming from 10 states across the Midwest, 112 students from 18 colleges and universities gathered in the heart of Madison, Wis., for the 12th annual Midwest Dairy Challenge. Students came together to gain valuable life, career and dairy management skills, as Dairy Challenge allows for the applications of theory and learning on a real-world dairy farm while working as part of a team.
The Midwest event expanded in 2017, offering this premier opportunity to 40 additional students compared to previous years, as interest has steadily increased since the first regional event in 2005. "The Madison area is blessed with the necessary resources it takes to expand the Midwest contest," states Ted Halbach, faculty associate in dairy management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and host of the 2017 Midwest event. "There are a number of progressive dairy operations within a 30-mile radius of campus and a concentration of industry professionals who serve them. We're pleased to see a number of these folks now working for dairy businesses that have stepped forward as volunteers 'to give back' to a program that benefited them as undergraduate students."  More)
APHIS website scrub continues to come under fire
A half-dozen animal welfare groups, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture in an attempt to compel USDA to publicly disclose thousands of animal welfare records that the agency, for years, posted on the website of its Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

These records - inspection reports, research facility annual reports, regulatory correspondence, enforcement records and lists of entities licensed under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) - have been posted routinely for many years by USDA, pursuant to Freedom of Information Act affirmative disclosure requirements.

"Plaintiffs and others have also relied on such records to advocate for protection of animals used in research, exhibition and the pet trade and to petition the USDA to more diligently enforce the AWA, to promulgate standards for animal protection and to formulate and institute policies and practices that will advance the protection of animals," the complaint says.

Industry rolls out new food date labeling standards
In a new industry-wide effort to reduce consumer confusion about product date labels, grocery manufacturers and retailers have joined together to adopt standard wording on packaging about the quality and safety of products.

Currently, more than 10 different date labels on packages - such as Sell By, Use By, Expires On, Best Before, Better if Used By or Best By - can result in confused consumers discarding a safe or usable product simply because it's past the date on the package.

The new voluntary initiative streamlines the myriad date labels on consumer products packaging down to just two standard phrases. "BEST If Used By" describes product quality, where the product may not taste or perform as expected but is still safe to use or consume after the given date. "USE By" applies to the few products that are highly perishable and/or have a food safety concern over time; these products should be consumed by the date listed on the package - and disposed of after that date.

The new initiative for common phrasing is led by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and the Grocery Manufacturers Assn. (GMA), the two major trade associations for retailers and consumer product manufacturing.

Attention: Animal Science Companies!
Are You Looking for a Way to Thank Your Best Customers?

You can search every article in the database in a single pass for exactly the information that you need. It is a great tool for anyone in the industry, and its value increases every time new proceedings and conferences are added to the collection.
Does this sound like a resource that you would like to share with your best customers?
ADSA now provides an easy and affordable way for you to do that-the S-PAC Bundle. You can now purchase a bundle of subscriptions to distribute to your customers to show them how much you appreciate their business ... and they will keep you in mind as they use S-PAC!  Here are the basics:
Determine which bundle best meets your needs (multiple bundles may be purchased):

  • 50 subscriptions at $55 each:              total cost = $2,750
  • 100 subscriptions at $45 each:            total cost = $4,500
*Note: The ADSA individual member rate is $75 and the non-member rate is $150, so buying bundled subscriptions provides a considerable savings!
Then go to https://secure.fass.org/SPAC_bundles.asp  to place your order.   A file with your bundle's unique access codes will sent to you as a pdf, suitable for printing on business card stock, for easy distribution.  The individual to whom you give S-PAC will use the code to activate their S-PAC subscription (ADSA membership is not required to activate subscriptions), which runs for 365 days from date of activation. There is nothing else you need do except know that you will stand out and be remembered and appreciated by your most valuable customers.
