The Truth
"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life.'"
John 14:6, NIV
If you're like me and you’ve watched multiple seasons of a certain British baking show, you might also enjoy another TV show called “Is It Cake?” In this series, bakers compete to make cakes that look like things that are not cake, such as a rubber duck or gym equipment. It is amazing how realistic these cakes look and it is nearly indiscernible to tell which is which. As technology advances in so many ways, the “real-ness” of many things is hard to tell. What’s real and what’s not. What’s true and what’s not?
Thankfully, as Christians, we have Jesus Himself, the Truth living in us.
But why does Jesus call Himself “the truth?” When Jesus says, “I AM the truth,” He says He is God. And God calls Himself I AM in Exodus 3:14 when He reveals His name to Moses.
God is truth because He is who He is, always, no matter where you are in the universe, whether you're at the beginning of time or the end of time. In the same way a rock is always a rock, God is always God.
God’s truth — who He is — the content of what it means that He is Himself, is revealed in the goodness in all of creation. So, when Jesus says, "I AM the truth," He makes the amazing claim that He is one with God over all creation and over all time. He is the Son of God and is the human expression of the unchanging nature of God.
When so many things can seem unclear or when circumstances feel like shifting sands, we can look to Jesus. He is the truth. When everything changes around us, He never changes and His love for us never changes.
A Prayer
Almighty God, you revealed your nature in your Son, Jesus. He is the Truth. By the work of your Holy Spirit, help us to trust in you God, and to be able to see clearly in light of your truth. And help us to trust in your unchanging goodness when we cannot see clearly for ourselves. We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
