Construction Update

  • The contractor has started the concrete curb and gutter at the limits of the roadway;
  • The base-lift of asphalt was poured along the 1st Avenue East roadway;
  • Excavated material, not intended for re-use, was removed from site.

Next Week

  • Contractor prepping surface features for the upcoming sidewalk.

Curbing

The curbs & gutter were poured first, defining the area of the roadway. It provides protection from dirt, rainwater runoff, and erosion.

Asphalt

Street asphalt is poured and smoothed using several layers. Asphalt that hasn't been properly compacted will settle under traffic, resulting in a very rough and uneven surface. Placing multiple thinner layers enables the contractor to achieve proper compaction, resulting in a much better finished product and one that won't deform under traffic.

Fun Fact:

Curbs didn’t become common until the 18th century. Before then, the most common way to separate the street from the pedestrians was with small wooden posts (called bollards).

The DRP2 curbs are more pressed than poured. Each section formed before hitting the ground like a cookie cutter. The concrete is still wet allowing for some touchups. This ensures each curb has exactly the same slope, ideal for water runoff.

Construction area: 1st Avenue East between 9th Street & 10th Street 900 block of 1st Avenue East
