Construction Update

  • Helical piles are complete. These are required for the foundation of the future boardwalk
  • Excavation for footings is ongoing
  • Footing for the cement foundation of the boardwalk has been poured

Next Week

  • framing and pouring of the foundation wall for the boardwalk, on top of the footing from this week.

Excavation

Contractors used an excavator to dig out a small area for the foundation of the boardwalk. In addition to the excavator, crews had to dig by hand to expose areas around essential underground infrastructure.

Footings

The foundation supporting the eastern portion of the boardwalk requires a footing to ensure stability on top of the soil in the ground. The actual pouring of the concrete took roughly an hour. Building the forms and testing the concrete took the majority of the time. Concrete requires a lot of prep time.

The concrete was poured into a boom concrete pumper truck, which allows for pouring into awkward smaller areas and repositions easily.

Fun Fact:

A concrete slump test measures the consistency of a concrete batch to see how easily the concrete will flow. The test not only observes consistency between batches but also identifies defects in a mix, giving the operator a chance to amend the mix before it is poured on site.

The ideal mix will not be too stiff or too soft. If you're working in very hot or dry conditions, or if the mold has intricate shapes, you may want a slightly wetter mix. Keep in mind that the more water in the mix, the higher the risk of cracks.
