Construction Update

  • The forms were completed for the foundation wall (including rebar installation within the wall), and the foundation was poured.
  • The forms were removed from the concrete foundation wall after the concrete was cured.
  • The concrete for the foundation wall and footing continued to cure. The consultant tested the concrete to ensure it met concrete specifications.

Next Week

  • Backfill of material around the foundation wall and boardwalk.
  • Start the construction of the boardwalk.
  • Removals along 1st Avenue East (ie. existing asphalt), in preparation for re-surfacing.

Foundation Forms

Contractors built forms to support wet concrete until it dries and becomes the hard concrete we're used to. Once the concrete has hardened enough to support itself, the forms are removed, and more time is given for the concrete to fully cure.

Foundation

The foundation wall is built to withstand the Eastern side of the boardwalk. Once the concrete is cured contractors will fill in dirt around the foundation. The piles to the West of the foundation support the western edge of the boardwalk.

Fun Fact:

Reinforced cardboard tubes, known by the popular brand name Sonotubes, are used in many construction projects, from a backyard deck to large industrial projects. Concrete is poured into these tubes to create solid concrete, cylinder-shaped pillars. The benefit of these tubes is how easy they are to install since they do not require any form of construction or heavy equipment. They can be placed by hand, positioned with supports, and have concrete poured quickly and conveniently

These tubes were added to some of the helical piles in this project to add additional lateral support where the piles will be exposed along the boardwalk due to elevation changes.

You can see these blue tubes in the background of the first image.
