Partnership Protects 746 acres in a Sea-level Rise
Salt Marsh Migration Corridor
| | |
A partnership consisting of The Conservation Fund, The Nature Conservancy, Eastern Shore Land Conservancy, Maryland DNR, U.S. Navy, Ducks Unlimited, and USFWS Chesapeake Bay Field Office recently conserved 746 acres of forests, fields, and wetlands in a sea level rise wetland migration corridor near Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. The partners pooled North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA) grant funds with Maryland DNR Rural Legacy and Navy Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Challenge funds to complete the purchase of perpetual conservation easements on two properties. Protecting properties in the migration corridor will provide space for salt marsh to migrate upgradient as sea level rises, maintaining habitat for the at-risk saltmarsh sparrow, federally threatened eastern black rail, and other marsh birds into the future. The partners, members of the Middle Chesapeake Sentinel Landscape Partnership, obtained a $3,000,000 REPI Challenge Grant that is being matched with NAWCA and state funds to protect over 4,000 acres in the migration corridor.
