Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

May 20, 2024

Good Morning Democrats,

In Fiscal Year 2023/2024 Torrance County spent a little over 76 million dollars, a very large chunk of money, but only about 10% of that money came from Torrance County taxpayers. The county received over 68 million dollars in grants or direct payments from the state and federal governments through the Covid Recovery Act (for schools) , Build Back Better Act (for roads, and a County Roads Building), PILT, the Inflation Reduction Act, and the American Recovery Plan Act. The American Recovery Plan Act funded water projects in McIntosh, Manzano, Torreon, Duran, and Encino and there were road improvements to chip and seal, then micro seal roads throughout the county.

Various grants were administered by both state and federal agencies, including the USDA, FEMA, Senator Ben Ray Lujan’s office and Congresswoman Stansbury’s, the New Mexico Office of the State Fire Marshall, the State Water Trust Board, plus appropriations from the State Legislature. All of these were federal monies that were intended to be used in economically depressed areas like Torrance County.

In the not-too-distant future, Torrance County will be building a 9-million-dollar Fire/EMS/LifeGuard Helicopter Service heliport which will house a Physician’s Assistant and Flight Nurse while the helicopter is present on nights and weekends. Between PMS clinics in the county and the LifeGuard staff, Torrance County will have 24 hour “urgent care” medical care, funded with the assistance of Senator Lujan and Congresswoman Stansbury, along with the USDA from monies from the Infrastructure Act, Build Back Better, and the Inflation Reduction Act.
