Good Morning Fellow Democrats:
The founding fathers had good reason to decry religious intrusion into government.
By the time our forefathers were contemplating the tenets by which our country would be formed and governed, Europe, including England, Ireland and Scotland, had endured hundreds of years of strife related to the Inquisition and Reformation. Calvinists and Protestants were hung, burned at the stake, and drawn, quartered and beheaded by the thousands for the audacity of questioning the Papal authority imposed upon their rulers.
It is impossible to convey the magnitude of the determination of the founding fathers to instill and maintain separation of church and state in America. "The purpose of the separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe in blood for centuries." - Thomas Jefferson.
Or, if you like, Ronald Reagan, "We establish no religion in this country. We command no worship. We mandate no belief, nor will we ever. Church and state are, and must remain, separate."
I bring this up solely to inform you why the convicted felon candidate of the Republican Party is trying to distance himself from Project 2025 authored by the Heritage Foundation. I have encouraged you to educate yourselves on it in the past. It is real. Here are a few bullet points from it:
- Dismantling of government agencies by reclassifying thousands of federal employees as political appointees to enable mass dismissals. The Department of Education would be eliminated, paving the way for draconian state legislation such as adopted in Louisiana and Alabama inserting religion into the schools.
- The FTC, FCC, and the DOJ would be placed under the president's control and be "overhauled" top to bottom, with diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives jettisoned. (sound like the evangelical voice coming through?)
- Restrictions on mail-order abortion pills with penalties for providers. (wonder where that comes from??)
- Medicare and Social Security would be scaled back and privatized.
- Climate change policies would be reversed with more focus on fossil fuels.
Like much of the Republican agenda, these changes and others are being advanced by extreme right wing, largely evangelicals. They threaten the very foundation of our democratic republic. At the core of much of it, lies the intrusion of religion into governmental operations. History has proven how that scenario plays out.
Read Project 2025 for yourselves. Google the principals. You'll see why it's frightening. Ask your friends and family to do the same.
Thanks and FIGHT ON!
