Democratic Party of Torrance County Newsletter

Dear Fellow Democrats:

I hope everyone is well and that you have placed Saturday’s meeting on your calendars. Early voting starts tomorrow and absentee voting is now available. It's on! This is the most important election of most of our lives. We cannot lose the White House to a man who we know is incompetent and has told us that he will follow a "scorched earth" approach if he is elected. The House of Representatives is up for the taking and we need to hold our slight advantage in the Senate. All our Representatives are up for reelection and Senator Heinrich is in a fight for his seat. Please vote and encourage your friends and families to do the same.

Lately the Reagan 1980 question of whether you are better off now than you were four years ago keeps popping up. I thought it would be good to remind us of all what was going on four years ago. Four years ago, the then President was in denial about the impact and loss of life which would result from Covid 19. He was holding press conferences asking whether the scientists could inject detergent into our bodies to combat the virus. Even though he himself nearly died from Covid, his failure to act quickly and warn the American people of the approaching pandemic led to the deaths of over one million of our fellow citizens.

The other big news, of course, is the outbreak of protests taking place in our country regarding the war in Gaza. I am old enough to remember the protests of the war in Vietnam. These spread throughout college campuses much the same as today's protests, and eventually led to the violence at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. Many believe that Nixon was the beneficiary of the television coverage of those demonstrations and the ensuing violence. Don't get me wrong - I totally believe in our right to engage in civil disobedience and protest. But I also believe that there is no place for violence and destruction of property in doing so. I believe such action detracts from the cause. The media coverage of the confrontations and property damage obscure the principle being protested.

The Republicans will be quick to attempt to capitalize on this discord even though their party has consistently failed to recognize the dire situation of the Palestinians and support a two-state solution in the region. Hopefully President Biden will be successful in negotiating a cease-fire, a release of the hostages, and ending the death and destruction that has gone on for too long.

Stand Up! Push Back! Vote!
